Stone Soup
Listening Center
Objectives
- Students will listen to a story on cassette tape.
- Students will follow along with the story in their books.
- Students will write a recipe for Stone Soup.
- Students will write a paragraph using sequencing, with instructions for preparing Stone Soup.
- Students will participate in cooking and eating Stone Soup at the end of the week.
Materials
- Cassette recording of Stone Soup. Stewig, John. New York: Holiday House, 1991.
- Six copies of Stone Soup
- Geology Journals and pencils
- Ingredients for Stone Soup from the story
- Bowls
- Spoons
- Napkins
Procedure
- Teacher will model a review example of sequencing for writing a paragraph, using opening, body, and closing.
- Students will listen and follow through with the recording and the book copy of the story.
- Use the book or listen to the story again to write down the recipe of Stone Soup in your Geology Journal.
- Students will then write a paragraph, using first, second....., give instructions for how to cook Stone Soup.
- On Friday, make Stone Soup, having the students telling the order of ingredients and how to cook it.
Evaluation
- Are the students listening to the story, or are they reading the story on their own or simply paging through the book?
- Are the students following along in both the book and listening to the tape? Are they getting lost easily?
- Can the students find the recipe and copy it in their journals?
- Are the students using sequencing words such as first, second...., to tell how to cook Stone Soup in their paragraph? Does their paragraph include an introduction, body, and closing?
- Can the students instruct the teacher how to cook the Stone Soup?
