Objectives

Anticipatory Set

Let the students have a few minutes to jump around the stones in the circles before beginning the activity.

Materials

Procedure

  1. Place 2 circles of 11 stones on different areas of the gym floor.
  2. Model the activity for the students.
    ** Students will be told a certain number of stones and which direction to jump. They will then take turns going around the circle stating a math sentence for their number.
    ** Remind students of safety precautions, watch out for others, jump safely!
  3. Remind the students that there are several different ways to obtain each number, ex: 5=4+1, 3+2, 5+0....
  4. Choose a number of stones that the students have to jump, ex: jump three stones to your right, each student will jump three stones, and that will be their new number.
  5. After each student in the circle has said a correct math fact to satisfy their number, choose another number of stones for them to jump.

Evaluation

  1. Are the students recalling their math facts easily? Are they still
  2. using their fingers as manipulatives?
  3. Can the students jump from one stone to the next with ease and coordination?
