Rock and Roll!
Science
Objectives
- Students will predict what will happen to the rocks.
- Students will observe, describe, and record changes in rocks.
- Students will apply their learning by describing the forces that break down and wear away rocks.
Anticipatory Set
Take the class outside. Wrap some rocks in a heavy piece of fabric or cloth bag. Hit the wrapped up rocks a few times with a hammer or baseball bat. Take the rocks inside and open the fabric. Have the students examine the
pieces and describe the differences and similarities after hitting them with the hammer or bat.
Materials
- 3-4 rocks for each pair of students
- 1 hand lens for each pair of students
- 1 tub with lid for each pair of students
- Filter paper
- Water
- Rubber Band for each pair
- Plastic cup for each pair
Procedure
- Prepare tubs with all materials needed for the students before activity, 1 tub per table group of 5-6 students.
- Before students do activity, have them predict what they think will happen if we shake the rocks inside the tub. Write down this prediction.
- Model the activity for the students, have them make predictions as you go. Post instructions on board also.
a. Use a hand lens to observe your rocks. Record observations.
- Put rocks into the tub, fasten lid with rubber band.
- Shake the tub hard for at least 5 minutes.
- Take the lid off. Record observations.
- Pour water over the rocks.
- Take rocks out.
- Put paper filter into the cup.
- Pour the water through the filter into the cup.
- Look at the filter and the rocks with a hand lens.
- Observe and record what you see.
- Walk around room, assisting students.
- Discuss the students observations.
- Discuss changes in rocks and some real life forces that can break down and wear away rocks.
Evaluation
- After initial demonstration, can students predict what will happen when perform a similar activity? Can they predict what will happen when they filter out the water?
- Are the students observing and recording the changes in rocks? Do they understand that what they have done has caused those changes?
- Can students describe some things that can break down and wear away rocks?
