Rationale/goals

The United States is a country full of diversity. This unit is intended to explore how that diversity came to be. Immigration was and is an important force that shapes our society. One main goal of this unit is that the children grow to appreciate and treasure differences.
The children will be exposed to varying reason for immigration and the diverse experiences that immigrants bring to this country. The lessons in this unit will help children to understand that each individual is different and that people can be placed into a mold. However, the children will also learn that cultural backgrounds do effect people and that in order to fully understand them, it is important to understand their culture.
The children are at an age where they are beginning to shape ideas about who they are and develop ideas about others. This unit is important in that it will give these children new perspective about their ancestor and culture and also give them a deeper understanding of a diverse group of people.
