We Remember the Holocaust

Spelling

Teacher of the Lesson: Katie O'Malley
Lesson Topic: Spelling
Grade Level: Fifth
Approximate Time: 10 to 15 minutes daily

Objectives:

  1. Students will memorize and learn 10 words that relate to the Holocaust theme for two different weeks.

Materials:

Procedures:
Introduction -- (Monday)

  1. Have students take out their spelling tests from last week. In the second column of this form students will write the words from the pre-test given.
  2. Inform students that since we are studying the Holocaust and reading two novels with a Holocaust theme, our words this week are linked to this concept.
  3. Give the spelling test orally to the entire class. When done students are to work individually to correct their mistakes and create their new list.
  4. Their new list is created by taking only those marked wrong from the "Holocaust" list and then supplementing it with "other words they need to know how to spell." Students should have 10 words in total when the list is complete.

Sequence of Instruction --

  1. On Tuesday, students will be given 10 minutes to have a teacher look over their words and thus finalize their list. Once finalized it is the student's choice as to how they best study for the test. [Some choose to work individually, others in pairs, and others in small groups.]
  2. On Wednesday and Thursday, students will be given time in class to practice their spelling words. During transition and down times, students always have something to do, like study for spelling.

Closure -- (Friday)

  1. Students work in pairs to administer the individual tests to each other.
  2. Once corrected, the students conference with the teacher. Here, the teacher will look over the test and record the grade in his/her grade book.
  3. Tests will be saved and the misspelled words will be added to the following week's list.

Evidence of Students Achieving Objective:

  1. Students will score at a 70% pass rate or better on their final test.

Adaptation or Reteaching Ideas:

  1. For those students who excel in spelling, keep on hand a list of the most commonly misspelled words. Also, continually remind and circle words in their writing that they could add to their list of "words that I need to know how to spell."
  2. If a student does not score at a 70% pass rate or better, then it is crucial to re-evaluate the activities he/she is doing with the time in class. Perhaps it is necessary to implement specific assignments for that child during practice time. An example might be to have him/her write their words 10 times each.

Reflection:

If students score well on the Friday tests, then I will know that I have managed them and their time wisely. Re-evaluating those who are struggling is important. Taking time to observe them during the 10 minutes of spelling could be all that it takes. Or even test and practice with one student individually for the week.
