Monteverde Cloud Forest: Tour Introduction

Objective:

Materials:

Introduction:

  1. Ask students their previous knowledge about cloud forests.
  2. Explain to students what a cloud forest is.
  3. Explain the significant amount of animals that live in the cloud forest.
  4. Ask how deforestation might affect all of the animals.

Sequence of Instruction:

  1. Explain that in 2 days we will be going on a mock tour Monteverde Cloud Forest.
  2. Explain that I will lead the tour. I will give the background information. However, the students are responsible for researching one animal and presenting it to the tour. They are to make a construction paper replica of the animal and provide a short description on a note card of the it. I will hang it from the ceiling and as I, the tour guide, stop in front of it, they are to tell the tour group about it.
  3. Explain that they will have time in class today and tomorrow to research and make a replica in groups of 4. I will provide the materials for research by giving students copies of descriptions of animals and students will have access to rainforest books on shelf.
  4. On Friday, they will need 3 tickets to enter the cloud forest. We will begin at 9:15 and walk around the forest as students tell the group about their chosen animals.

Closure:

  1. Have students look in their handbooks for the Monteverde page. They are to use this page as a guide. After they finish the guide, the can transfer the information to a group note card that I will have.
  2. Allow students to get into groups of four. Once settled, ask groups to chose an animal from the choices I have written on the board.
  3. Hand out descriptions to to groups.
  4. Ask for any questions.

Assignment:

  1. Allow students the rest of the time to start.
  2. Remind students that they have until Friday to finish.

Evidence of Learning:

  1. After I have given a brief introduction to what a cloud forest is, students will become familiar with a cloud forest.
  2. After I have told students the many animals associated with the Monteverde Cloud Forest, students will become aware of the different animals. As students begin researching, they will become aware of the many more form of life associated with rainforests.
  3. Teacher will listen for responses of "there will be no more habitats for the many forms of life in the forests if deforestation continues" to evaluate students ability to apply previous knowledge of rainforest.
  4. I will describe the student's responsibilities for their presentations. To evaluate whether students understand, I will ask students for questions.
  5. I will walk around and observe groups working to evaluate whether all students are participating in researching an animal and making a replica on both days.

Reflection:

  1. Do students understand their responsibilities for their presentations?
  2. Do students seem motivated to do the presentations?
  3. Are students able to work together?
  4. Are all students helping each other?

Adaptations:

Help lower students comprehend the material by reading it to them.
