INTRODUCING HAL

OBJECTIVES:

MATERIALS:

PROCEDURE:

Introduction/Anticipatory Set

  1. Explain to the students that you have a new friend for them to meet. His name is Hal and he is hearing impaired. When introducing Hal, follow the ideas which are on the attached script.
  2. Make sure to have Hal tell the students that he enjoys riding horses, looking at pictures in books and watching t.v. so that they begin to understand that they might have things in common with Hal even though he wears a hearing aide.

Sequence of Instruction

  1. After introducing Hal, ask the students if they have any questions they would like to ask Hal.
  2. Answer the questions the students ask Hal in his voice. If students donÕt really have any questions, ask some of your own that will help them learn more about what it might be like to have a hearing aide.

Closure

  1. Explain to the students that Hal will be staying in the classroom for the next couple of weeks. They should feel free to play with Hal and to help make him feel comfortable in their classroom.

EVIDENCE OF STUDENTS ACHIEVING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Students will express their interest in learning more about Hal, by asking him questions which will help them understand what it might be like to have a hearing aide.
  2. Students will learn that Hal enjoys doings things that they enjoy by listening to Hal talk about how he likes to ride horses, look at pictures in books and watch t.v.

ADAPTATIONS/RETEACHING IDEAS:

  1. If students are not as interested as you would like, try to include them in the conversation with Hal by asking them to also share some of their favorite things to do. Does anyone enjoy the same things Hal does?

EXTENSIONS:

  1. Have students do role playing activities involving Hal.

REFLECTIONS:

  1. Was I able to get the students interested in Hal?
  2. How did the students react to the lesson?
  3. Did the students play with Hal later in the day?
  4. What would I change the lesson in the future?
