The Center for Education in Small Urban Communities at the College of Education, University of Illinois seeks to hire a Visiting Teacher Collaborator in Science to work in partnership with in-service teachers, district and school leadership, and university faculty to plan and deliver high quality professional development to K-12 teachers in the Champaign and Urbana School Districts. The Science Teacher Collaborator will be highly involved with local professional development in a small number of target schools with the greatest needs, but they will also be involved in planning and carrying out district-wide and cross-district professional development events, such as the Chancellor’s Academy.
The focus of the Teacher Collaborators’ work will be to assist K-12 teachers to develop the skills they need to be successful in small urban schools. These would include content area expertise, differentiated instruction, culturally relevant pedagogy, classroom management, family engagement, and assessment. The Teacher Collaborator is expected to be a highly skilled, confident, charismatic individual with a strong commitment to diversity and school improvement.
The position is a full-time, 12 month, visiting (up to three years) academic professional appointment. Experienced excellent teachers with demonstrated effectiveness teaching diverse learners are encouraged to apply. It may be possible to arrange for a leave of absence from partner districts. It is possible to pursue doctoral training at the University of Illinois while employed as a Teacher Collaborator.
Qualifications: Master’s degree in a science or science education discipline required. Also required is a standard or master elementary or secondary teaching certificate with a middle grade or secondary endorsement in science or equivalent. Minimum of 5 years classroom experience in either large or small urban settings is required. Candidates must have previous experience designing and implementing teacher professional development in science. A demonstrated effectiveness with diverse learners is also required. Experience with teacher mentoring and working within a coaching model is desired. Candidate with a knowledge of integrated science, Biological Sciences Curriculum Study, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and National Science Teachers Association standards and technology supported instruction are preferred.
Compensation: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experiences.
Start date: Positions will begin on or around July 1, 2008.
