Al S. Davis Leadership Award
The Al S. Davis Leadership Award honors the life and educational career of Al Davis and his long and ongoing relationship with the College of Education. Al Davis strongly believes that all students can learn in an educational climate highlighted by strong leadership. This merit-based award supports a graduate student in the College of Education who intends to pursue a leadership role in teaching/administration in a K-12 urban or small urban school environment. Students who meet the award criteria are encouraged to apply directly to their department. In addition, college faculty are encouraged to nominate qualified candidates. First preference is given to minority students. Scholars will receive a taxable award of $1,000 payable in two installments (1/2 fall; 1/2 spring) which will be applied to their student account.

Conditions of the Award
Applicants must meet the following conditions:
- Be a registered graduate student in a degree-seeking education program during the fall 2008 and spring 2009 semesters.
- Intend to pursue a leadership role in teaching/administration in a K-12 urban school environment.
- Maintain satisfactory and continuous progress.
- Attend the College of Education Student Recognition Brunch.
(First preference is given to minority students.)
Applicant Procedures
To be considered for this award, applicants must submit via e-mail the application and supporting material directly to their departmental contact by the applicant deadline:
- Graduate student award application.
- Provide a copy of UIUC academic history and GPA from SIS [Student Information System] (provided by department).
- Submit a 2-3 page current curriculum vita, including research and/or teaching experiences, service awards and honors.
- Submit a 1-2 page current personal statement which includes an outline of the degree program, stage of degree completion, educational and career aspirations, commitment to an urban school environment, and anticipated leadership role(s) as an administrator or teacher.
- Provide two current letters of recommendation, with at least one letter from a College of Education faculty member. Letters should address the applicant’s qualifications for this specific award. Please note letters of recommendation are to be e-mailed directly to applicant’s departmental contact.
