Accounts and Passwords

At UIUC, one can have a dizzying array of passwords. We can help you better understand and manage your accounts and passwords. Below are a few resources followed by some commentary on the most commonly used accounts. If you need any help with your accounts, please use the resources below and feel free to call or visit User Services in room 1.

Commonly Used Accounts

Network ID

While this may not be used as often as others, this is easily the most important University account and password you have.  Sometimes referred to as the "keys to the kingdom", your Network ID can be used to set the passwords of almost all other accounts.   With it you can register for courses and conduct transactions against departmental accounts and even your personal University bill. The Network ID is used for access to UI Direct, UIUC dialup services, and to countless web applications offered by the University.  We and CITES recommend that you keep this password very secure and different from your other accounts.   For more information on the Network ID, please visit http://www.cites.uiuc.edu/netid.

Active Directory (AD) Account

Active Directory is becoming more and more common on campus.  Students will recognize this account as the one used for Netfiles.  Faculty and staff may recognize it as the one used to log in to their Windows PCs on their desktops and many other Microsoft Windows resources such as file and print services. Common resources include...

  • Staff home directories (e.g., \\files.ed.uiuc.edu\users\g-meade)
  • Departmental shares (e.g., \\files.ed.uiuc.edu\Acad Dept\Spec Ed)
  • Your web folder (e.g., \\www.ed.uiuc.edu\wwwroot\staff\g-meade)
  • Your course web folder (e.g., \\www.ed.uiuc.edu\wwwroot\courses\SPED322)
  • Your Exchange email account (e.g., through Microsoft Outlook)

For more information on Active Directory accounts -- including how to reset or unlock your password, please visit the "Using Active Directory" web page.

Express Email

CITES Express Email account is a campus email service that provides access to email using a desktop email client or web interface. For more information on your Express Email account, please visit http://www.cites.uiuc.edu/express/index.html.
