Research indicates that early intervention can substantially improve outcomes for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Research on the earliest indicators of ASD in infants and toddlers will be reviewed and “red flags” in very young children will be identified and illustrated with video vignettes. Recommended practice for screening and early diagnosis will be presented. A framework for linking early indicators to meaningful intervention outcomes for young children with ASD will be provided. Strategies for integrating developmental perspectives with evidence-based intervention techniques for very young children with ASD will be suggested and illustrated with video vignettes.
The Goldstick Initiative for the Study of Communication Disorders
Recognizing the great need for a new and sustainable training and research program in the area of communication disorders in children and youth, Phillip C. and Beverly Kramer Goldstick generously endowed this initiative in 2005 for the Department of Special Education in the College of Education. This effort will provide new methods and practices to families and schools to ensure that every child, regardless of disability, has the opportunity to live her/his life as independently as possible in one’s home, neighborhood, and community.
