Ralph A. Smith, Professor Emeritus of Educational Policy Studies, was honored in a special issue of the Journal of Aesthetic Education (JAE). Titled "In Pursuit of Excellence: Essays in Honor of Ralph A. Smith," the summer, 2002, issue recognizes Smith's contributions as the founder and long-time editor of the JAE, and his work as a scholar in the field of aesthetic education.

Smith founded the journal in 1966 and served as editor until 2000. Published quarterly by the University of Illinois Press, the JAE has been a home for debate and discussion of aesthetic theory and practice in both education and in philosophy for participants from all disciplines of study.
