The University of Illinois, as part of an effort to honor significant events and people in the institution's history, has erected a series of historical markers around the Urbana-Champaign campus. One of the newest recognizes the great contributions of Samuel L. Kirk, a long-time member of the College of Education faculty.
Kirk is recognized by many as the "father" of modern special education, coining the term "Learning Disability" in 1957.
The events and people recognized were chosen from nominations by submitted by faculty, staff and students.
The Kirk marker stands on the north side of the Education Building, near the main entrance. A formal dedication ceremony is planned for later in the year.
