FY 07 Course Development Grant
General Information for FY07
In recognition of the changing nature of global society and the increasing interconnectedness and interdependence between nations, the College of Education has made a commitment to internationalize its programs to give its graduates the international perspective necessary to teach or work in this newly emerging environment. One aspect of this strategic direction for the College is attending to how teaching and subject matter might be reconceptualized in view of international perspectives that will help students develop cross-cultural global competence, critically engage issues of globalization, and reflect on principles of global diversity and justice (see http://www.ed.uiuc.edu/international).
In academic year 2005-06, up to four grants of $6,000 each will be awarded to College of Education faculty to internationalize teaching and content of courses currently being offered in the College or to develop new courses with international focus. At least half the available grants must go toward internationalizing undergraduate courses. Proposals for these College of Education International Course, Curriculum, and Teaching Development Grants will be reviewed by the Internationalization Committee and are subject to final approval by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and the Dean of the College of Education.
Applicants are encouraged to be creative in their proposals and to take advantage of existing relationships and resources in the college and the campus. Cooperation between faculty from different departments and across disciplines is strongly encouraged. We are less interested in receiving proposals that will simply add a unit on international or global concerns and issues to existing courses, and more interested in proposals exploring significant engagement with and the redesign or reconceptualization of teaching and content.
Possible projects might include:
- Developing a small working group of faculty members who together explore how their respective subject matters can be reconceived in view of international and global issues, and as a result of this mutual exploration yield new or significantly redesigned courses.
- Experimenting with a joint teaching project.
- Holding a small conference to address how pedagogy and subject matter in a given field might be reconceptualized. (Note: Conference funds are also available through a grant from the International Council. More information on this grant can be found at http://www.ips.uiuc.edu:16080/ic/hewlettconference/. The deadline for submission of proposals is November 18, 2005.)
Funds may be used for the following purposes:
- Support for a graduate assistant
- Pay conference expenses
- Summer salary (with department approval)
- Other purposes as approved by the Committee and Dean
Funds may not be used for travel or course buyout except in extraordinary cases with advance approval of department executive and Dean.
In addition to delivering a project report, grant recipients will be required to present their work to the College of Education faculty in a seminar. Awardees are also encouraged to present at an academic conference and/or write and submit an article for publication.
Applicants wishing to receive feedback and advice prior to submitting a formal proposal are encouraged to speak with Fiona Griswold, Coordinator of International Programs (see contact information below) or Thomas Schwandt (tschwand@uiuc.edu), Chair of the Internationalization Committee, to discuss their ideas.
