East Asian and Pacific Studies Funding Opportunity
In Spring 2006, EAPS (in conjunction with disciplinary units) will support two advanced graduate students to teach undergraduate seminars (on East Asia, Southeast Asia, or the Pacific). Applicants must be advanced to candidacy and currently writing the dissertation. Selection will be based on the merits and contributions of the proposed course, on the strength of the overall application materials, and the student’s progress toward the degree.
Please submit:
- a 1-2 page course proposal that includes a BASIC course outline.
- a statement of qualifications to teach this particular course; please refer to your own training and dissertation research.
- a CV.
- 2 letters of recommendation (one from your primary advisor) that address your qualifications for teaching the proposed course and your progress in the department.
- A brief letter (or email) from the Head or Chair of the department in which you plan to teach the course, agreeing to schedule the course.
Stipend: $7000

Graduate Student Conference Travel
EAPS has limited funds to support graduate student travel to conferences in the United States at which the applicant is presenting a paper. Please submit a 1-page proposal that outlines the nature and significance of your participation in the conference; please indicate the relevance of this conference participation to your graduate career. Please have your advisor sign that application as well. The maximum grant is $350, which you may combine with other grants. Please submit these applications by October 10 for fall 2005 travel and November 15 for spring 2006 travel.
Pre-Dissertation Summer Travel
EAPS will support 2-3 students in summer 2006 for exploratory research in East Asia, Southeast Asia or the Pacific. The maximum award is $2500. Please submit a 2-3-page single-space application in which you:
- describe your proposed dissertation research
- outline your proposed summer activities (with specific reference to the length of your planned stay) in relation to your proposed dissertation
- review your preparation for this research
Applications must also include a CV and 2 letters of recommendation (one from your advisor) that refer specifically to your readiness for your proposed activities and their significance to your proposed dissertation. If you have secured research contacts in your destination country please mention this in your application.
