Summer study abroad programs
Italy
On May 29, 2005 graduate students from Curriculum and Instruction and the Special Education department traveled to Reggio Emilia, Italy. In a summer session advanced topics seminar, participants reviewed recent research and literature on practices of early childhood education. Their focus was on enhancing the young learner's potential by studying societal influences, instructional strategies, and environmental factors. One of the highlights was a seven-day tour of the infant-toddler and pre-primary schools in Reggio Emilia. Overall, participants learned how all young children, including students with special needs are recognized, valued, and educated in Reggio Emilia.

Brazil
On May 23, Educational Policy Studies graduate students left for a two-week trip to Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Students worked with Brazilian educators on implementing ideas from the late Brazilian educational philosopher, Paulo Freire. Their trip included two 3-day long encuentros which allowed them to participate in educational programs for the poorest children living in Rio de Janeiro. Throughout the course of the trip, students studied Freirian philosophy in current issues and in the classroom.

South Korea
This past June, a group of 10 graduate students from Human Resource Education visited Busan, South Korea, for two weeks. The trip provided an introduction to South Korea’s education system with a particular focus on workforce and human resource development in the context of public education and private company settings. Students were able to experience South Korea’s rich historical, economical, social, cultural, and political traditions and make comparative evaluations to US-based systems. Some of the places they visited include: Motorola Korea Headquarters, Samsung Life Insurance, Seoul National University, and Hyundai Motor Center.

Australia
August 17 marks the arrival of our 4 exchange students from Sydney, Australia. They are currently in the undergraduate program at Deakin University for elementary education. They decided to study abroad to learn more about and experience American education.
