Study: Community colleges integrating skills standards on wide scale

Career Tech Update (available online to ACTE members)

A high percentage of community colleges are integrating skills standards into their curriculum, especially in areas such as construction, automotive, and health occupations, according to a study authored by Steven Aragon (HRE Associate Professor), Hui-Jeong Woo (Educational Psychology Ph.D. student), and Matthew Marvel (HRE Ph.D. student). Funded by the National Center for Career and Technical Education, the study collected data to determine the extent that skill standards are utilized by community colleges in curriculum development, delivery, and assessment. It found that 75% of colleges use these standards within their career and technical education curricula.

Matt Marvel awarded Kauffman Foundation Fellowship

The Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation has selected Matt Marvel (Ph.D. candidate) to receive a 2004-2005 Kauffman Dissertation Fellowship. His dissertation proposal was selected by a panel of reviewers as one of the ten best proposals from among a pool of dozens of submissions. Congratulations Matt!

HRE students and faculty present research paper at Asian HRD Conference

Picture from 2004 Asian AHRD ConferenceJean Hee Shin, Carol Packard, Khalil Dirani, and Jason Fu (HRE graduate students) and Peter Kuchinke (Associate Professor) presented their research paper, "The Meaning of Working in China, Germany, Korea, Lebanon, and the United States," at the 3rd Asian Conference of the Academy of Human Resource Development. The theme of the conference, held in Seoul, Korea (November 20-23, 2004) was "HRD in Asia: Harmony and Partnership."

Ramon Fernandez-Caamano and Scott Johnson study accepted for publication

A paper by Ramon Fernandez-Caamano (Ph.D. candidate) and Scott Johnson (Professor & Department Head) was accepted in Comparative Technology Transfer and Society, a peer-reviewed journal from Johns Hopkins University Press. The paper, "Consequences of Technology Transfer in the Pueblo Viejo Gold Mine" was based on Ramon's Early Research Project, a cross-site instrumental case study. It should appear in the April 2005 issue.

"Flexible teaching: Programs focus on preparing students to meet the challenges of teaching at community colleges"

A unique set of skills and knowledge are required to teach in community college settings. Programs like HRE's Community College Teaching and Learning (CCTL) specialization are helping to provide those skills. The CCTL program, as well as Loyola University Chicago's program were profiled in this Chicago Tribune article.

"Illinois part of new center bringing engineering into high schools"

Scott Johnson, HRE Professor & Department Head, is the research director and site administrator for a new NSF-funded program aimed at infusing engineering into high school technology education programs. The grant amounts to approximately $1 million over five years.

Ji-Hye Park study published

A paper by Ji-Hye Park (Ph.D. candidate) and Dae Bong Kwon was published in the September issue of Human Resource Development International. The study, published in the peer-reviewed section, was titled "Employees' perceived work environment and self-directed learning readiness in Korean companies."

Steven Aragon named Principal Investigator of NRCCTE study

Steven Aragon, Associate Professor, is the principal investigator for a research study funded through the National Research Center for Career and Technical Education/Office of Vocational and Adult Education designed to look at the value added by career and technical student organizations on participants. The grant amounts to approximately $160,000 for fiscal year '04.

Peter Kuchinke receives Distinguished Scholar Award

Peter Kuchinke (HRE Associate Professor) is the recipient of the 2003-04 College of Education Distinguished Scholar Award. The award is given annually in recognition of the scholarly quality, significance, and productivity of faculty research.  Productivity is indexed by the volume of published books, book chapters, and refereed articles in one's field, as well as the duration and consistency of one's scholarly performance over a period of time. Aside from sheer numbers, however, the award also recognizes the quality, influence, and significance of a candidate's scholarship.

Building Professional Credibility Symposium

The HRE department hosted a one-day symposium on Building Professional Credibility to help students prepare for the transition to the work force. The event was supported by a grant from Boeing. Students also spent a day visiting the Boeing Leadership Center in St. Louis.

Professor Richard A. Swanson receives College of Education Distinguished Alumni Award

Dr. Swanson, a Professor at the University of Minnesota, graduated from our department in 1968. He is an outstanding teacher, scholar, and public servant with an unbelievable drive for excellence and impact. His professional vita lists over 225 refereed journal articles, books, and published conference proceedings, over 150 conference presentations, and an extensive listing of grants and contracts. Many of his publications are now required reading in most HRD graduate programs throughout the world.

 

As a founding member and former President of the Academy of Human Resource Development, he was influential in the creation and growth of what has become the leading academically oriented organization for research and practice in HRD. Perhaps the most significant service contributions to this organization are his successful efforts to conceptualize and develop four new refereed journals for the field of HRD. These journals include Human Resource Development Quarterly, Human Resource Development International, Advances in Developing Human Resources, and Human Resource Development Review. Each of these journals contributes to the emerging knowledge base in HRD in their own unique way and they are considered the most important and highest quality journals in the field.

We are very proud to have such an outstanding person and professional among our list of exceptional alumni.


Steven Aragon receives Emerging Scholar Award

Professor Steven Aragon has been selected to receive the Emerging Scholar Award for 2003 from the Council for the Study of Community Colleges (CSCC) . The award will be presented during the annual CSCC conference that will precede the AACC conference in Dallas later this year.


Andrea Ellinger receives Richard A. Swanson Research Excellence Award

HRE Professor Andrea Ellinger received the Richard A. Swanson Research Excellence Award from the Academy of Human Resource Development. Her article was entitled "Supervisory Coaching Behavior, Employee Satisfaction, and Warehouse Employee Performance:  A Dyadic Perspective in the Distribution Industry" and was published in Human Resource Development Quarterly. The award was presented in Austin, Texas at the annual meeting of the Academy of Human Resource Development.


Scott Johnson named a University Scholar

Professor Scott D. Johnson is one of six University of Illinois faculty members who have been chosen to be 2002 University Scholars. The program recognized excellence while helping to identify and retain the university's most talented teachers scholars and researchers. He is an expert on learning and instruction related to technical content central in engineering schools, technical institutes, and corporate education and training centers.

"A University Scholar designation is the highest honor we bestow upon our young faculty," said Chet Gardner, Vice President for academic affairs for the university. "This recognition is especially meaningful since recipients are nominated and selected by their peers. These awards not only acknowledge the superb accomplishments of the recipients, but also symbolize the university's commitment to foster outstanding people and their work."

Mara Freeman receives award

Mara Freeman received an Illinois Consortium for Educational Opportunity Program (ICEOP) Award. ICEOP Award recipients are selected through a rigorous, statewide competition at over thirty Illinois institutions of higher learning. ICEOP's goal is to increase the number of underrepresented faculty and staff in Illinois institutions of higher education and higher education governing boards. The awards are renewable for up to four years.
