Master's Degree Program Guide

Incoming Master's students

Both the M.Ed. and the M.A. degrees require at least 32 hours of coursework. If the student is completing a thesis degree (M.A.), this total must include at least 2 hours of 599 (Thesis Research) and a maximum of 8 hours of 599 (Thesis Research). A Master's student has a maximum of five years in which to complete the program, although in general the program can be completed in three years or less.

These courses can be taken in any order, except for the Proseminar, which should be taken in the student's first year:

  • EPS 500 Proseminar [4 hours]
  • EPS 400, 402, 420, 423, 424, or 426 [2 hours]
  • EPS 401, 410, 411, 412, 413, or 414 [2 hours]

  • At least 2 additional units of graduate coursework (can include up to 8 hours of 599 for thesis students)
  • TOTAL: [32 hours]

Master's thesis

For thesis students, a proposal for a Master's thesis must be developed in consultation with an advisor, and a three person supervisory committee appointed to work with the student as the project is completed. At the conclusion of the project, the thesis must be examined and approved by the supervisory committee as a whole. Registration for credit in 599 during the semester in which the student applies for the degree is required. For M.Ed. students, no thesis is required. However, most students planning to continue to the PhD program are expected to complete the MA (thesis) option.
