Summer Doctoral Training Institutes in Philosophy of Education Stanford University
The Spencer Foundation
7/2002 - 9/2004
$135,417
The desire to improve graduate education in philosophy of education is the motivation behind this training program with Stanford University. Two interrelated structural problems are being addressed and a mechanism is being developed to allow top students in the field take advantage of excellent faculty resources presently spread thinly across several geographically dispersed institutions. A three week summer training/research institute for advanced graduate students, conducted by faculty from premier graduate programs, allows opportunity for discourse and research to be presented at professional meetings in the field. Students who attend the seminar receive an award to enable their attendance.

Underrepresented Minorities in the Academy: Understanding the Career Attainment Process
U.S. Department of Education
9/2001 – 8/2004
$1,508,156
This project examines how traditionally underrepresented students traverse the educational pipeline to attain careers for which graduate school training is a prerequisite. A central interest of this research is to understand the inter- and intra-group differences in navigating the transition from undergraduate status to a career in the academy. The project is survey based, targeting students who have participated in the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC-SROP), Summer Research Opportunities Program. The longitudinal study employs multiple methodologies to explore critical questions of persistence, achievement and attainment. It collects data on a sample of non-SROP students from host institutions, assisted by Educational Testing Service databases.
