- Alfred Hitchcock - The Master of Suspense Hitchcock's films are so deceptive, such seemingly light suspense fare, buteven his frothiest confections - "To Catch a Thief" for instance, or "Northby Northwest" - turned on serious themes that ran throughout his mostthoughtful works. Identify a good man caught in someone else's deceit, place him opposite a knowing woman, use the absence of sex to underline theerotic - and watch the fireworks. From this distance, it's hard to rememberwhat a pioneer Hitch was: the lighted milk in "Suspicion"; thehomo-eroticism of "Rope"; the 12-minute lapse in dialogue in the climacticscene of "The Man Who Knew Too Much"; the frankly unstated prostitution of"Notorious" and "North by Northwest"; the fact of a bathroom scene at allin "Psycho", let alone what happens in the shower. Then, of course, therewas Hitch's penchant for sly appearances in his own films. If his dry witin the colorized intros of his resurrected television series has lulled youinto a false sense of security, take a second look at just how disturbinghis films really are. This site will get you started.

- State Hermitage Museum', St. Petersburg, Russia, The The State Hermitage Museum's Web site is quietly elegant, its understatedsimplicity beautifully framing the opulence of St. Petersburg's Hermitageitself. The site includes not only the history of the buildings andextensive collections, but also visitor information, a schedule of currentand past exhibits, and a rundown of the educational outreach programs thatthe museum provides. Browse the collection via the highlights, which comewith text to put the items in context, or via the Digital Collectionbutton, which displays each item available in a high-res format for thoseinto details. The second option is best for those on high-speedconnections, but both provide a wonderful experience.

- UCR California Museum of Photography UC Riverside's California Museum of Photography has struck at its Web sitea well-choreographed balance between its real and virtual presences: theonline exhibits make you want to visit the museum. Even at 72 dpi, thestuff here will knock you out. Online teasers illustrate each exhibit withhandfuls of photographs, and guide you through much as would a brochure at a local gallery. The site also archives past exhibits - something atangible museum usually cannot do. Be sure to glance through thehand-scrawled notes reshaping "ideal" beauty seen through the lens of Raoul Gradvohl in his burlesque portraits (not for the kids). We also liked First Sundays, which documents an educational enrichment program for Riverside's kids. Will the kid who threw the plastic fork on the glass be the next Jackson Pollock?

- Tunes.com - The Internet's Music Hub With MP3 making waves among users, the major media outlets are piling on tothe online music bandwagon. Rolling Stone, the granddaddy of music press, backs Tunes.com, the newest effort. According to their blurb, Tunes has "amillion song clips from 350,000 albums, over 1000 music videos, profiles on85,000 artists and bands, exclusive concert photos, daily music news, reviews and nightly live and archived performance webcasts." Prettyimpressive. As a "big name" site, it offers the usual professional effortthat blends content with related news. Naturally, Tunes wants you to signon and join their online community so they can collect your demographics, although this is not required for most content. It's a good site, worthwatching for its proprietary broadcast content.
