Educational Policy Studies

College of Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I am applying to several strong programs. Why should I opt to enroll in EPS at UIUC?

Our approach to policy studies is rooted in a strong belief that policy researchers, and experts need to be immersed in an interdisciplinary dialogues about the significance, purpose, and practice of education, through a historical, social, and philosophical framework of analysis. In this respect, scholars and educators need to be aware of the policy implications that result from an interdisciplinary and global course of study. Our department includes scholars who study education through several disciplines and specializations such as: higher education policy, international/global education, urban education, cultural studies, race-ethnicity in education and politics of education to name a few.

Moreover, EPS encourages students to explore ideas and perspectives available through other departments of education, including curriculum and instruction, educational psychology, organization and education leadership, special education and human resource education. In addition, EPS encourages study across the disciplines of History, Communications and Sociology. The location of our university is in close proximity to a major U.S city (Chicago) which allows our department to facilitate research that is influential in city, state and national policy formation.

Our faculty are not only actively publishing scholars but, more importantly, are engaging teachers who hold leadership positions in national-international professional organizations tied to their various areas of expertise. A committed teachings staff allows for the opportunity to work closely and intensively with faculty and other students across the department, making it possible for both masters and doctoral students to develop more meaningful academic and personal relationships.

Students are admitted to study in the Department, not to work with individual advisors. Students have the freedom to explore the varied perspectives of the department before declaring a specialization in History, Social Foundations or Philosophy of Education. Hence individuals are free to change advisors in accordance with changes that may occur in their academic interests as these unfold during the course of their doctoral program.
