A symposium exploring models of education funding for states and nations and taking a close look at some new strategies to measure adequate funding.   A Forum on the Future of Public Education made possible through The Edwin J. O’Leary Endowment in Financial Management in the Department of Educational Organization and Leadership

WHEN and WHERE:

FEBRUARY 15 - 16, 2007<> THE WHITEHALL HOTEL, 105 East Delaware Place, Chicago, Illinois

About the Symposium

The nature of public education in the United States today is one of dynamic changes and of uncertain futures. What is the role of a public school? Who should be teaching? Who should be held accountable for student learning? Questions without easy answer come from all directions and from all philosophies. But, no single question raises more controversies for more disputes than “How and why should we pay for it?”

Establishing the economic value of education as a long-term investment for the state and the country, and having reliable, objective measurements of adequate funding to gain optimal value for investments in education is essential as a matter of public policy.

Adequacy of Funding and the Future of Public Schools in Illinois brings together a number of top scholars in the field of educational finance to present new views and to continue debates about educational value and evaluation.

About the O’Leary Endowment in Financial Management

The O’Leary Endowment in Financial Management was established by Richard E. and Ann M. O’Leary to honor the life and work of Richard’s father, a graduate of the College of Education at the University of Illinois.

Edwin O’Leary earned four degrees from the University and distinguished himself throughout his long career as an expert in financial management of public schools and in the legal aspects of school leadership.

In 1995, Richard and Ann, themselves graduates of Illinois, established the O’Leary Endowment in the Department of Educational Organization and Leadership. Their wish was to see this fund used to draw new people and new ideas into the study of school administration and leadership.

Their gift will allow future generations to benefit from Edwin O’Leary’s passion and expertise in school leadership.
