Top Banner

 

Many authors will not want to change the top banner at all. There are two things in the top banner that can be modified: The banner title image (the largest text in the banner to the left.  In the example above it is the graphic that says "Educational Policy Studies" ) and the banner small image (to the left of the "I" logo)

 

Banner Title Image

The banner title image is the same for all rendered web pages within a given folder.  It can not be changed for an single rendered web page. Generally the banner title image will be the same for an entire unit.  To change the banner title image, do the following:

1. Create the new title image.  Just send a request to webmaster@mail.ed.uiuc.edu and we will create the image and put it in the appropriate file location.
2. After the image is created, the College Webmaster will edit the following properties in the appropriate folder properties file:
   • Banner Title Image:  should be the path to the banner title image from the root of the website.  i.e. /library/images/titles/eps.gif
   • Banner Title Image Alt Description:  the alt tag for the image. i.e. Educational Policy Studies.
   • In the folder properties file, these two properties will look like this:

Banner Small Image

The banner small image can be the same for all rendered web pages in a folder.  It may also be changed for a rendered web page.

To change the banner small image, do the following:

1. Create a new banner small image.  If you already have the image, skip this step.  The image should be exactly 76 pixels tall, but its width may vary.  The page will look best if the width is between 76 and 200 pixels.  The image may be a jpeg or gif format file.
2. Move the image onto your web site.
   • You can use Contribute to do this by inserting an image into a web page, then deleting it from the page.  Contribute will upload the image and you just need to find which image folder it is in.
   • Alternatively you may open up the image folder on your web site on your deskop and move the image into it. 
3. If you want the image to appear in all rendered web pages in a folder, edit the folder properties file in that folder.
   • Banner Small Image:  should be the path to the banner small image from the root of the website.  i.e. /library/images/headimage/frontlobby.jpg
   • Banner Small Image Alt Description:  the alt tag for the image. i.e. Front Lobby Photo
   • Banner Small Image Width.  This is the number of pixels the image is.
   • In the properties.html file, these two properties will look like this:
4. If you only want the image to appear on a single rendered web page
   1. Click on the template properties in the bar just above the page.
   2. Edit the Banner Small Image, Banner Small Image Alt Description, and Banner Small Image Width as you would in step 3.  The dialog box will look something like this:
