EdWebs Glossary
EdWebs. The College of Education web publishing system. A combination of Macromedia's Contribute as an editing tool and the College's own programming.
Contribute. Macromedia's web page editing tool. A simplified version of their Dreamweaver tool.
Content Buddy. Some units have individuals with the Office of Educational Technology or the Deans office designated to help them both with authoring and content.
Content Document. An individual web page that the author edits in Contribute.
Content Template. The template used to create content documents. Some templates include: "unit home page", "standard", and "standard sidebar". When you create a new web page, you choose which Content Template to use.
Rendered Web Page. The document that the web browser sees. The "rendered web page " is a fusion of parts of the content documents (content areas and page properties); folder properties; and menu files into the what the web browser is given.
Properties. Properties are things like unit name, author email, banner image location, whether to show a feedback form link, etc. They are discrete pieces of information used to create the "rendered document" given to the web browser. Authors change them by editing folder files (folder properties) and content documents (page properties found at the bottom). The same property such as author email may appear in both folder properties and page properties.
Page Properties. The properities that are edited at the bottom of a Content Document using Contribute. There properties only affect the individual web page they are in. They are edited at the bottom of Content Documents.
Folder Properties. The properites that are edited in the properties.html file in each folder. Folder properties are inherited. That is a folder property such as author name is used in all the rendered documents in that folder and below it unless it is overridden by another author name being set in a folder properties file or page properties below that folder.
Folder Properties File. The files that contain folder properties.
Inherit and Inheritance. Properties are generally inherited. That is if they are left empty in content documents or property files, the value is inherited from the property file in the folders above. Menus are also inherited. If a folder doesn't have a menu file, it will use the menu from the folder above it.
Menu File. The files that contain the left menus.
Content Areas. The large editable areas within a Content Template. This is where the main content of web pages go.
