Aliasing A Folder

Why Alias a Folder?

Sometimes you want to alias an entire folder because you have an entire folder of content that you want to use in two different sections of the College Web site.  You could just copy it, but that would mean every change you made needed to be made in two places.  Aliasing a folder solves this problem.  Be careful though as users may sometime wonder if two similar pages found in different places on the site are the same. Excessive aliasing can make a ball of confusion for authors also.  Be sure to use the notes field in the properties.html file to explain the logic of your aliasing.

How to Create the Aliasing Folder:

By using a folder alias, you have two folders.  An "aliasing folder" which has no content in it except a properties file which points to the "aliased folder" which has the actual content.

  1. Create a properties.html file in the aliasing folder.  You may have to create the aliasing folder if it doesn't exist.
  2. Set the pathbar property to what you would like to see in the pathbar
  3. Set the content path property to the aliased folder.  This should start with a "/" such as /oet/webs
  4. The aliased folder must be on the EdWebs part of the COE Web Server.
