CTER4 Major Project Presentations
in WebBoard
Jim_Levin: Okay folks, Since Jill isn't here yet, we'll start with Briant Kelly. Briant, take it
away!
Briant_Kel: ok here goes
Briant_Kel: This project is intended for the use in the classroom. The website developed is for a high
school statistics course at Libertyville High School. The website contains information relating to the
course: expectations, assignments, teacher information, and class notes as needed. The website is
setup for easy use and also so that pages can be printed out with as little extra graphics or
information. The colors are the school colors with the "Wildcat"
Briant_Kel: The main goal of the web site is to keep both the students and parents connected to the
class and to me, the teacher. Many times parents are not fully informed of the amount of classwork and
homework that students have in class. By utilizing this website, it will be a good tool for my
students. Eventually, if this website is used and appreciated by the students, a site for all my
classes will be developed. The math department coordinator is also i

Briant_Kel: Conclusion
Briant_Kel: This project was a good step toward integrating more technology into my classrooms.
Hopefully, this will be utilized in the upcoming year by my students. After a year, I will sit down and
evaluate the website from student suggestions. My goal is to develop sites for all my classes similar
to this one. Overall, I learned something about myself as an educator and I want to continue to help
my students to the best of my ability.
Briant_Kel: Any questions?
Heidi_Adre: Briant, I thought that your class expectations were very thorough.
Kim_Baker: Do most families in your district have a computer?
Jim_Levin: What did you learn about yourself as an educator?
Briant_Kel: Yes, most families in our school have computer access
*** Signoff: Geoff_Freymuth (Connection reset by peer)
Nancy_Bogu: What about those that don't?
Briant_Kel: That I need to keep both my students and parents informed all the time
Briant_Kel: There are plenty of computer labs at the school for students to have access
Kim_Fitzer: Briant, has you district made anysteps toward requiring teachers to have their course
materials on line?
Jim_Levin: good point, Briant.
Vicky_Roma: Families may not have computer access but they can also ignore papers sent home or mailed
too

Briant_Kel: Thanks
Laura_Stof: Nice job, Briant!
Brian_Twad: Have fun at B-ball camp this morning, Briant!

Kerry_Rode: I think the most important thing about my project is it is FINALLY off the ground! I know
that there are many changes to be made, but those will come as the
summer progresses. Time was a big factor for me. I can't begin to describe all the things I learned
from this project. I learned that the computer will do only what I
tell it to do and most mistakes are mine and not the computer's. I learned that you absolutely cannot

Kerry_Rode: I anticipate adding pages as the year progresses. The additions should include rules for
different games/activities, and additional class assignments.
Naturally, I'm also going to encourage the other teachers to add their contributions. That's pretty
much it.
Jim_L: Questions for Kerry, anyone?
Mark_Foley: Kerry - I really liked your inclusion of pictures. Are you going to do more of that during
the year?
Kerry_Rode: Yes, I plan to update at least weekly.
Kim_Fitzer: Is your department going to give you any kudos for taking on the project?
Kery_Strys: Kerry- Does your school have any rules about posting students pictures?
Kerry_Rode: I doubt it. Ask Geoff about that one. New administrator and all.
Jim_L: They should - you web site is one of the few I've seen for PE/Health - you're really
breaking new ground, Kerry.
Kerry_Rode: Thats not ll I've broken this past three weeks!
Jim_L: :-)
Kim_Fitzer: Ain't it the truth :)
Anne_Catey: !
Jim_L: Great Kerry - way to go!!!
Kerry_Rode: I meant all I've broken. I think I broke four fungo bats out of frustration working with
our baseball team.
Kim_Fitzer: What's a fungo bat, Kerry?
Jim_L: Thanks Kerry. Next up is Nancy Bogusch. Ready, Nancy.
Nancy_Bogu: Ready!
Kerry_Rode: It's a bat used for the sole purpose of hitting infield and outfield to players. They are
pretty delicate.

Jim_L: go for it,Nancy.
Nancy_Bogu: After working on my eportfolio at orientation, I decided that the Ch*vez students could
make eportfolios of their own and I would make web pages listing the
grade levels.
Nancy_Bogu: Students in the fifth grades on creating simple web pages, including their names, things
they liked, their favorite web sites (which we will link to later),
and a place for their future projects.
Nancy_Bogu: I created a page which will list the grade levels with links to grade level pages which
will link to the student pages. I decided to associate each grade
level with a different graphic and color to assist students in navigating the web site.
Nancy_Bogu: For my multimedia assignment I thought Ięd try to have the 5th grade web page play a
motivating sound as it loaded. This didnęt go as well as I had hoped.
Nancy_Bogu: The biggest lesson for me was learning how to make a web page and using the Dreamweaver
software.
Nancy_Bogu: The biggest lesson for me was learning how to make a web page and using the Dreamweaver
software.
Nancy_Bogu: Future plans include having more of the students create web pages, redesigning the Ch*vez
web page, and possibly placing the student pages and projects on a
CD.
Nancy_Bogu: Kathy commented on the use of students names on the internet, which was also part of
yesterdayęs discussion with Nick Burbules. As far as I can tell there
is no mention of needing permission to put students names on the school web site.
*** Kathy_Schlappi (651048148@morton011.dyn.allianceit.net) has joined channel #EdPsy387
Nancy_Bogu: I would need permission though to use their pictures and/or voices. Permission slips and
the Acceptable Use Policy will be handed out on the first day of
school on Tuesday.
Nancy_Bogu: Even though their are risks involved in publishing the studentsę work on the internet I
think the benefits outweigh the risks. Posting the studentsę work on
the web would motivate them to do their best,
Jim_L: 1 min. left,Nancy.
Nancy_Bogu: focus on the communication (not how many pictures can fit on one page), and instill a sense
of pride in seeing their work on the internet.
Nancy_Bogu: It would also provide an opportunity to discuss what is appropriate to publish on the web
and web safety. It would also provide an opportunity to discuss
what is appropriate to publish on the web and web safety.
Nancy_Bogu: In addition, Ięm hoping that classroom teachers will notice what the students are doing and
be encouraged to include more technology in their lessons.
Jim_L: Thanks Nancy, very nice! Any questions, folks?
Julia_Jeff: I like the graphic and color links for each grade level. That was a great idea.
Heidi_Adre: Nancy, what do you mean by risks?
Anne_Catey: Good point about the other teachers including tech.
Geoff_Frey: Yes I like that idea also

Heidi_Adre: Okay, that's what I thought. Thanks
Jim_L: Great, Nancy, Thanks! NExt up is Marita Child.
Nancy_Bogu: I had to download an update for Dreamweaver.
Marita_Chi: I'm ready
Kim_Fitzer: Ahhh!
Marita_Chi: Last year one of my roles as the new, wet behind the ears, computer teacher was to
participate in a cross-curriculum project that involved the 7th grade
students as they prepared for the annual science fair.
Marita_Chi: My part was to prepare the kids for producing computer generated graphs in Microsoft Works.
Since I didn‰t know how to do this and most of them didn‰t
either, it was a learning experience for both of us.

Marita_Chi: That is why my project involves putting together a unit in which they would not only learn
how to graph, they would also learn how to gather data, identify
variables as manipulated and responding well before science fair preparation began.
Marita_Chi: I have divided my unit into three parts to take place over the course of three months.
*** Kery_Strysick (strysick@PPPa34-ResaleChampaign1-4R7237.dialinx.net) has joined channel #EdPsy387
Marita_Chi: The second part involves the writing of the web project so that they can collect data,
analyze it, and graph it. The third part is the final preparation for

Marita_Chi: When I was working with the 7th grade last year I found that even as they were collecting
the data for their projects and
Marita_Chi: Hopefully this will make is less stressful for them (and me) when show time comes in
February.
Marita_Chi: I was going to do it myself and had started to do so, but I felt it was important that they
should play the larger role and choose something that is relevant
to them.
Marita_Chi: As one who likes to work with computers but wasn‰t sure how to incorporate the use of
computers in a one-computer classroom, I am learning so much about the
incorporation of technology into the curriculum.
Marita_Chi: Amen!
Jim_L: Does that mean you're done, Marita, or just a comment on what you've learned?
Jim_L: :-)
Marita_Chi: both!
Jim_L: Great, anyone have questions for Marita?
Kerry_Rode: You only have access to one computer at a time in the classroom?
Heidi_Adre: Marita, great project. I know that science fair can be a daunting task for some students.
Kim_Fitzer: What a great project! Did you write applets for the graphing features? I saw some last
night when I was poking around on the net
Marita_Chi: Kerry, when I taught in a classroom I had only one for a long time. Now I teach in the
computer lab
Kerry_Rode: That's good
Ginger_Kas: Good job Marita! Great project idea.
Marita_Chi: Heidi, I never knew how daunting it was until this past year. I have so much new respect
for our science teacher and that is why I took this on
Linda_Grif: It would be a tough project with only one computer.
Jim_L: Great job, Marita, thanks! Next up is Kena Clark. Kena?
Heidi_Adre: I just always hear about it through the kids. I don't teach science either.
Kena_Clark: I'm ready
Marita_Chi: 'with one computer , yes very tough, I have 30 now
Kena_Clark: My project is a tutorial that will show new CTER students how to edit their ePortfolio.
Kena_Clark: I wanted to show them through a step-by-step website how to do this and also though a
video.
Kena_Clark: The video goes though the steps.
Kena_Clark: I‰m learning that the video needs more clarity to it so that it is clearly visible to the
viewer what I‰m doing.
Kena_Clark: I'm still working on figuring that out but at least you can hear the instructions when you
are watching it.
Kena_Clark: Navigation of the sight is straight forward except there is no way to go back except for
using the back arrow.
Kena_Clark: I know that that can easily be resolved and that is what I intend to do.
Kena_Clark: What I'd like to see happen next is for me to do more with using Composer.
Kena_Clark: I would like to deal with more of how you make the changes once you are in Composer.
Kena_Clark: The end
Heidi_Adre: Kena, was I your inspiration? :)
Jim_L: Don't you all wish Kena had done this before June orientation?
Laura_Stof: Absolutely!
Linda_Grif: Sure do!
Kathy_Schl: Yes!
Kim_Fitzer: Hey, Kena, I needed that tutorial!
Vicky_Roma: Will you include anything on basic HTML coding?
Marita_Chi: yes!
Kena_Clark: No Heide you were easy
Kerry_Rode: Kena, where were you the past three weeks when I really needed your tutorial? Just
kidding...I think.
Kena_Clark: Vicky, I'm not sure that I will get into HTML coding but that is a possibility
Vicky_Roma: I think a little bit of coding goes a long way in troublshooting
Jim_L: Very nice project, Kena - the CTER5 folks will really thank you. Next up is Amy Beth
Craddock.
Amy_Craddo: Ok...
Amy_Craddo: Good Morning, everyone. For my major project, I created what I call a "virtual classroom",
which is a web site containing course expectations, descriptions,
syllabi, links, and interactive devices in the form of a chat room, a web forum, and a ‹privateŠ
conference chat room.
Amy_Craddo: I think the most important aspect of my project is the interactive parts. These were fairly
easy to create, and can be used in lots of ways for discussion and
group projects, as well as a way to encourage interaction between the students, even between students
in different class periods. I also wanted student to know that the
website was for them, not for me, which is why I used bright colors, designs and graphics throughout
Amy_Craddo: What I learned from create my web site is, first of all, the amount of time involved in
creating and updating. In order to really search out everything and
lay it out the way I wanted, it took my attention almost like a full time job for two weeks. Hopefully,
I can find a reliable student helper to help me update my website
when the school year starts.
Amy_Craddo: Second, I learned to always make a copy of everything, and then make a copy of that copy.
Two copies might be enough. Preferably, put a copy on another
computer! Save everything multiple times. That way, if what you are attempting totally flops, you are
still ok, and if the computer wigs out, your work is safe.
Amy_Craddo: In the future, I plan to add a lot to my website, including some computer-based lessons,
weekly homework assignments, handouts, online quizzes, and maybe a
private way for students and parents to access grades. Ideally, I would like most of my lessons
accessible from the web.
Amy_Craddo: Thanks. Any questions?
Linda_Grif: When would you use the chat room, Amy?
Laura_Stof: Great idea to use a student to help you update the info during the year.
Jim_L: Very nice, Amy Beth!
Kery_Strys: I like your idea about finding a student helper!
Kim_Baker: I love the background colors! Your page is very appealing to students!
Julia_Jeff: I think I learned that saving information thing mulitple times also.

Amy_Craddo: Hopefully, I should have a computer lab at my fingertips due to a project I am doing with

Jim_L: Yes, great idea about involving students. Welcome Jill. Mark Foley is up next and then
we'll fit in Jill.
Jim_L: Way to go Amy Beth!!! Mark?
Mark_Foley: Ok - Here goes...
Mark_Foley: Hi everybody! My project was a short-term, consensus building WebQuest on Chief
Mark_Foley: Illiniwek. I created it as a resource for the teachers in the Champaign/Urbana area (this
is a
Mark_Foley: sensitive subject down here as many of you know), but it can also be used by students
Mark_Foley: across the state and country. The most important thing about my project was that it
Mark_Foley: challenged me to not only learn new aspects of web design (PowerPoint template
Mark_Foley: downloads, java quiz, document downloading, etc.), but it also gave me a great excuse to
Mark_Foley: learn and develop a true WebQuest. I have been interested in the WebQuest
Mark_Foley: phenomenon for a while now but I had never had a reason to research the subject in depth
Mark_Foley: and create a unique WebQuest on my own. It was fun, and I think I found a way to make it
Mark_Foley: a practical resource that lots of teachers in this area can use. I plan to create another
quiz for
Mark_Foley: after the WebQuest so students can be amazed at how much they learned. I also need to
Mark_Foley: finish up the official lesson plans for the quest. I would like to do another quest on
influential
Mark_Foley: Americans of the 19th century, but that will have to wait for now.
Mark_Foley: That's it. Any questions?
Heidi_Adre: Mark, last year my students did persuasive essays on this topic. I would love to use your
web site for next year.
Julia_Jeff: I loved the webquest. The Illini tribe has much history here in the Alton area. I am sure
our teachers will love it.
Mark_Foley: Thanks, Julia - I am trying to figure out how to make more teachers aware of it.
Linda_Grif: Mark, we hear a lot about the Chief controversy here in Rockford too. Great Idea!
Jim_L: Did you find any other sites on this same controvery elsewhere that you could use?
Marita_Chi: One of our area high schools is in the process of changing their name from the Redskins to
something else.
Kerry_Rode: Great job! history being one of my favorite hobbies, I'm sure I'll check your work often
Kathy_Schl: Webquests are awesome uses of technology - I'm anxious to create one, too.
Heidi_Adre: I think that some students actually changed their opinions when researching this topic.
Mark_Foley: There were lots of sites about the issue, but not many that were unbiased.
Mark_Foley: A lot of students are surprised to find their opinions change when they study facts.
Nancy_Bogu: Great idea! Students get the opportunity to practice problem solving and compromise.
Jim_L: Great job, Mark. It will be fun to hear how it goes. Next will be Jill Jones.
Jill_Jones: Ok, here it goes...
Jill_Jones: Hello everybody!
Jill_Jones: My original project idea was to explore how to publish classbooks on my classroom website.
Jill_Jones: My project quickly evolved into web design as I had to first develop my school site,
Vicky_Roma: test
Vicky_Roma: test
Jill_Jones: then my classroom site, and finally, the classbook idea.
Jill_Jones: Designing the two sites took the bulk of my time.
Jill_Jones: I ended up making a classbook into a PowerPoint presentation
Jill_Jones: by scanning the students' illustrations and saving them as gifs.
Jill_Jones: Next, I added the text.
Jill_Jones: I could then save the presentation as a HTML file and link it easily off of my classroom
site.
Jill_Jones: I learned that shared borders in FrontPage are a pain and that organizing files is
essential.
Jill_Jones: Personally, I think my classroom site will be the most beneficial to my students and their
parents,
Jill_Jones: but I am very excited to get the students going with PowerPoint and
Jill_Jones: can't wait to see their reaction to having their work on the web.
Jill_Jones: That's it!

Kathy_Schl: Your pages look great - the kids & parents will love them.
Kerry_Rode: I' m curious. If youdon't mind my asking, how long have you been working with computers?
You have an expertise that I hope to someday have.
Jill_Jones: I had done one other website - for our wedding.
Kerry_Rode: WOW!
Jim_L: Very nice, Jill. Next up is Geoff Fremuth. Geoff?
Jill_Jones: My husband is a computer guy - he sucked me in about 3 years ago.
Geoff_Frey: ok here it goes..
Geoff_Frey: Good morning all, Project Wetland is designed to be a collaborative research effort of
different wetlands by participating schools. The project centers on
students observing, testing and analyzing a wetland and its watershed and then sharing that information
with the other schools participating in the project
Geoff_Frey: The final project that students prepare is either a power point presentation or a virtual
tour of their wetland. Including a restoration/preservation plan and
presenting it to the other participating schools. This site is also meant to be a resource for learning
about wetlands.
Geoff_Frey: What did I learn from this project?
Geoff_Frey: First that this is a never-ending job of revision and improving. Also that form must
follow function. I have learned a great deal more about wetlands and
watersheds as I prepared this web site. Choosing which information was important to post. Keeping
information relevant and to the point while at the same time providing
enough.

Geoff_Frey: I have learned a multitude of little things like how to link, add pictures, add forms,
sound, and on and on and on. On of the neatest tools that I learned
was how to build in frames into a web site. Lots of nut and bolts about web page design and
maintenance.
Geoff_Frey: Through the readings and responses I have broadened my understanding of internet related
issues and have tried to apply them to this project. One of the most
exciting things that I learned was about all of the other teachers in CTER and their project ideas. I
have got so many ideas for things I want to do because of all the
other projects.

Geoff_Frey: What would I still like to do?
Geoff_Frey: I would like to continue to add to the reference sections of this web site so that it could
be more comprehensive. I would also like to delve further into
adding more sounds of the animals found in wetlands.
Geoff_Frey: Things that I need to work on would be an area for presenting the power point and virtual
wetland tours made by the students. I would also like to a photo
album where each school could post site-specific pictures of their wetland.
Geoff_Frey: One of the next steps I have to take is get the word out about this project and find
schools to participate.
Geoff_Frey: thats it... thanks
Heidi_Adre: Geoff, how long do students get to work on this project? It seems like it would take
months.
Amy_Craddo: Your website is layout is great, Geoff. It is so easy for visitors to navigate.
Julia_Jeff: Your website was amazing. You covered so much material. It is a wonderful resource.
Ginger_Kas: Your project is outstanding! I like the way the students have to create an end product

Teresa_Gra: I am excited about it's use and the prospect it has for troubleshooting in my school.
Teresa_Gra: My project entailed making a troubleshooting guide for classroom teachers to use.

Teresa_Gra: . I felt it was very important to keep directions simple and easy to navigate through.
Teresa_Gra: I want it to be a tool that will be used to troubleshoot problems with technology before
they ask for help from another source.
Teresa_Gra: I think the most important thing I learned from this project was the organizing of
information and making a site that is user friendly.
Teresa_Gra: . The details that were added such as the targeting and the adding of the script for the
form that is used to report problems, were important features added
that I hadn't done frequently before.
Teresa_Gra: The usage of this form will help me with my record keeping and also be a reminder to me
that someone is having problems.
Teresa_Gra: Emailing me to inform me of a problem will be a much easier way to report a problem than
telling me in a hallway, another classroom or the office, etc.
Teresa_Gra: Problems reported this way have a tendency to be forgotten
Teresa_Gra: This project will be posted on my school web site for use during the next school year and
directions for using our new Zen server will be added to it after
training in August.
Teresa_Gra: I see this project as something that will be updated frequently as new devices and software
are implemented.
Teresa_Gra: Anyone have any questions
Jim_L: I'm sure we all will want to use your site, Terri.
Geoff_Frey: Terri, is there a way you could share that with other schools?
Laura_Stof: Great idea! I wish we had something like this at my school...
Julia_Jeff: Our tech is never available. A troubleshooting guide would be great.
Heidi_Adre: Excellent idea! I know that our tech guy gets frustrated with us!
Linda_Grif: Good resource for teachers!
Yvette_Kel: This is awesome-have you gotten a chance to get any feedback from your teachers yet?

our team hour, and the newsletter and student work would change
every one to two weeks.
Linda_Grif: We feel that an added advantage will be that because we‰re posting homework and major
projects together, it will help us plan better so our students won‰t
become overwhelmed.
Linda_Grif: I learned so much from doing this; I don‰t know how to choose one thing. I‰ve never
created a web page before. I learned a lot about HTML and now have a
reference book. I learned that I could figure out what I needed to do as long as I was patient and
persistent.
Linda_Grif: I also learned to check the page on more than one computer when I was done. Pages created
in Netscape don‰t always look the same on Internet Explorer. I
also learned how much more that I want to learn about web design.

useful this is to our families. My principal would like to expand
this idea to the other teams in the school, but of course, the other teachers would have to be willing.
Linda_Grif: We‰ve also talked about the possibility of grades on-line down the road. We have a lot to
figure out before we get to that point, however.

Julia_Jeff: My part is Earth Science. I decided to use a WebQuest and make it ‹field friendly.Š There
are three lessons involved.
Julia_Jeff: The lessons include types of erosion, erosion prevention, and soil testing
Julia_Jeff: The first part of each lesson is an Internet search for information and a worksheet.

Ginger_Kas: Hello everyone! Hello everyone! Hello everyone!
Ginger_Kas: As a reminder, my major project is to let my students create a web site to display a
newspaper they will write. All the articles are going to be written by
the students and they will work collaboratively to put the newspaper on the Internet.
Ginger_Kas: Each student will find a picture on the digital camera that goes along with his or her
article and insert that as well. Of course, I could not simulate the
digital pictures because all of the pictures from last year were not saved on our computersL
Ginger_Kas: The subject that they will first write about will be a three-day/two night camping trip we
take each year. I also created a website so parents and students
can access the newspaper.
Ginger_Kas: The most important thing about my project is that the students will be able to learn about
technology while doing curriculum that is already in place.
Ginger_Kas: I also think that it is important that students have an authentic audience so their written
work is not just for a grade.
Ginger_Kas: I have learned so much doing this project.
Ginger_Kas: I really had to learn everything about creating a web site. The most difficult thing was
using Netscape Composer because the program would not keep the files
in the separate folders when I transfer them to the online folder.
Ginger_Kas: I learned quite a bit about java scripting to make some of my web page design to stay where
I put it as well. I also learned that sometimes getting up and
walking away from the project for a minute is the best thing I could do!
Jim_L: Important lesson!
Ginger_Kas: I really would like to do more throughout the summer with the homepage I have set up for
the sixth grade.
Ginger_Kas: I would like to link a page that works for the pictures of students, if my school will let

Jim_L: Great, thanks, Ginger. Next up is Yvette Kelsey. Yvette?
Yvette_Kel: My project goal was to transform my 8th grade technology classroom into a virtually
paperless environment.
Yvette_Kel: Instead of handing out an assignment on paper and setting the kids free to begin, I am
going to use Blackboard as a facilitator for assignments, tests,
discussions, etc.
Yvette_Kel: Students will have a weekly agenda that I have created for them that they can access
through blackboard. It will tell them what they should be doing that day
and where they can find the activities in blackboard so that they always have a homebase to go back to.
Yvette_Kel: I considered making my own pages instead of using Blackboard but I liked a few of the
discussion, test-taking, and organization options that were available
there. Plus, I wanted to experience Blackboard firsthand before I recommend it to anyone else in my
district.
Yvette_Kel: I also wanted to empower my students with more confidence in their ability to use
technology. They are fascinated by anything on the web, even classwork.
Yvette_Kel: There is one thing I learned that towers over others?that technology can actually be a
large part of the community-building activities that take place during
an my class (if the I make it a priority).
Yvette_Kel: My greatest concern during this project was my ability to structure a community-building
environment during a n online, paperless class.
Yvette_Kel: I addressed this in three ways:
Yvette_Kel: 1. adding several TRIBES activities to my curriculum that were not there before.
Yvette_Kel: 2. arranging a few projects to be partner or group-based (which I have not done in this
class before).
Yvette_Kel: 3. utilizing the message posting features in Blackboard that will require students to
express their thoughts and feelings about projects and ideas, etc.
Yvette_Kel: For example, many of my activities are cross-platform and focus on hands-on examples of
differences when moving from Mac to PC and vice versa. They will
respond to these Mac/PC thoughts when posting comments.
Yvette_Kel: Ironically, I think I actually strengthened the community in my classroom through this
online project.
Yvette_Kel: The next step I will take with this will be to link it to the school web page.
Yvette_Kel: I also want to start some kind of student technology portfolio for students to take with
them on zip disks at the end of my class. I hope that will help them
reflect on their work as they move on to other technology classes in high school.
Yvette_Kel: I definitely want to create other classes for teacher training and parent education in my
district!
Yvette_Kel: I also want to try to create my own "Blackboard" setup now that I understand the strengths
and weaknesses it has.
Yvette_Kel: What questions can I answer for you?
Kim_Baker: I love your community-building idea, what are TRIBES activities?
Anne_Catey: Great idea!

Vicky_Roma: Effective Communication Using Technology-Knox College

Kery_Strys: I feel this a site like this is extremely important at the middle school level becauseá
Kery_Strys: I have noticed that as students enter middle school they are less likely to talk to their
parents about what they are doing in school.
Jim_L: too true!

Kery_Strys: I hope this site will help increase parent‰s awareness of their student‰s day-to-day
learning and in turn increase their involvement in their child‰s
education.
Kery_Strys: When I first began designing this site I had a really hard time choosing layouts and color
schemes.
Kery_Strys: It became easier as I read the articles recommended by Jim and looked at other sites for
examples.
Kery_Strys: I had seen many websites before this but I never made a conscious effort to pay attention
to things such as colors, design, and layout
Kery_Strys: I feel I have come a long way in this area; however, I still would like to improve. (My
web page design seems simple; although it took me a lot of workásome
of your websites seem so much more ‹fun!Š)
Kery_Strys: Using Composer to create the page I often felt frustrated when I could put the text and the
pictures exactly where I wanted them.
Kery_Strys: These frustrations were partially due to my inexperience with Composer and also with the
limited functions of the software itself.
Kery_Strys: At the end of our presentations today I would really appreciate suggestions and
recommendations on software you all utilized to create your web pages.
Kery_Strys: Beyond improving design, layout and color scheme, I would like to make my class web site
more student centered and interactive. I would like to add engaging
activities and display student work.
Kery_Strys: Right now I have a family math or science challenge problem for each class I teach.
Kery_Strys: In the future I would like to set it up so that the answers and responses could be
submitted on-line.
Kery_Strys: Also, I would like to add a component for students and families to submit their own
challenges to other students and families.
Kery_Strys: I feel that the more engaged the students are the more useful this website will be.
Kery_Strys: In addition to the challenge problem extensions, I have started a problem based learning
webquest as a part of the 8th grade science site.)
