it works correctly, it will appear all at once in this chat
box. Read it and then I will answer any questions you may
have. Here it goes ..."
AnneC projects Presentation (EdPsy 387).
---------------
For my major project, I began
designing a web site for the classes I teach at
Cumberland High School in Toledo, Illinois. Since I teach three
different courses with entirely different requirements, it may take a
while before it is useful to ALL my students.
Because the site will be accessed mainly by students and their parents,
I tried to keep it as simple as possible to follow. Therefore, I chose
to have a theme running throughout my pages. I chose a notebook
background but used different colors to distinquish between the
different sections (subjects) of the site. For example, everything that
deals with American Literature is placed in the yellow "notebook"
(background) on the site. Likewise, everything that deals with the
research unit is in the light blue "notebook". I feel the students will
quickly relate to this format because they always use different
notebooks for their different subjects.
At this point, the site covers several different areas including class
requirements, interactive learning activities, favorite links, my email
information, and my autobiographical information. However, eventually,
the site will contain information for my three courses as well as some
other interesting things such as a school newsletter (written by my
English classes), students' exemplary work, additional links, and
several interactive learning activities.
Obviously, a massive undertaking such as this will not
happen overnight. Therefore, I have decided to focus on one course,
English III, for now. This particular course has several parts. For
now, I have concentrated on two parts: The Research Unit and American
Literature.
The Research Unit
I chose to begin with the research unit because this is what
the students focus on most.
Because the research paper is fifty percent of their fourth quarter
grade, it becomes a source of stress for the students and their parents.
They begin in August asking questions and feeling nervous about it. So,
this web site will help
answer their questions early so they can prepare themselves for the
unit.
Within this section, I have included several different
things for the research unit.
For example, the students can find the list of needed supplies, the
resource requirements, the due date list, and the evaluation sheet.
However, the best part is the one entitled "Research Help". When a
student clicks on this link, he/she will find a list of links that will
provide a variety of information, including help with the mechanics of
writing, how to paraphrase, and how to avoid plagiarism.
Eventually, I will include a check list that covers the basic "Do's and
Don'ts" of research in this site. Additionally, I plan to add a link to
a worksheet that will help the students evaluate the credibility of any
given web site. I also plan to add a chat room where students can go
online to ask me questions which will result in immediate feedback.
American Literature
I have also done some preliminary work on the American Literature
section of this site.
Throughout the literature class, there will always be vocabulary to
learn so I began the literature section of this web site by enhancing
the vocabulary section. When students click on this section, they will
not only see the list of words for a particular story but also be able
to complete a wordsearch, which can help them with the spelling of the
terms and is fun for them to do.
Eventually, I may add a refrigerator magnet game that will match the
definitions to the words. Using this type of technology may help to
motivate them to learn the definitions better.
Highlights of the Site
I feel one of the best parts of the site is the Research Links (Favorite
Links) page. Here is the URL if you want to take a look:
http://www.rr1.net/users/catey/classes/FavoriteLinks.html#FavoriteLinks
The wordsearch page is cool too. Here is the URL for the wordsearch if
you are interested:
http://www.rr1.net/users/catey/classes/Wordsearchhome.html#wordsearch
I have also started the Speech page. It contains an audio-reading of
Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken". I will eventually add the words to
the page as well. It will be used as an example of how to read a poem.
The students need this because their first speech is a poetry reading.
Here is the URL for the Poetry Reading:
http://www.rr1.net/users/catey/classes/poetryreading.html#poetryreading
What did I learn from this experience?
I learned a lot through this activity. Besides learning how to
embed java applets, I learned that it is best to downplay the
backgrounds so that the information is really what the visitors see.
Likewise, the backgrounds should be consistent so as not to confuse the
visitors. To explain, I know with some of the sites I have visited, it
is hard to remember where I started and if I'm still at the starting
site. That is why I chose the notebook theme. As long as the visitors
see a notebook, they will know that they have not left the site. If a
visitor has left the site through the links, he/she will know
immediately when he/she has returned by seeing the notebook.
Conclusion
This has been a very intense learning experience. I feel much more
comfortable using technology now and will be able to convey that to my
students as well. What I have learned in this class has been extremely
useful and, in turn, will benefit my students immediately.
Once completed, this web site will be very helpful to both
students and parents. However, it will take quite a bit of time to get
all the sections to function the way I envision them.
Does anyone have any questions?
If you would like (and if time permits), I could TRY to project the
above pages so you could see what I'm talking about. Jim, what do you
think?
---------------
JimL says, "wow"
KenaC says, "I really liked your idea of using the different colors for
the different subjects."
JimL says, "Let's give everyone another minute or two to read your note,
then take questions."
KimMF asks, "Anne, I liked the notebook idea. Is that a background you
found on the web?"
AnneC says, "Yes"
KimKB says, "I really liked your research help option -what a great way
to provide help and guidance"
HeidiA says, "I liked that you chose to focus on the research paper
first. That project gives students a great amount of
stress."
KathySS says, "I like the idea of the audio clip to teach how to read a
poem."
JuliaJ exclaims, "The audio clip is a great idea!"
MarkCF exclaims, "I agree with Kathy - the audio clip is a great idea -
Headphones in the Lab!"
LauraSto exclaims, "I agree...the audio clip is great!"
KerryRo says, "I like that too."
LauraSto says, "Great consistent background. It helps tie it all
together."
NancyBo says, "I like the idea of a credibility worksheet."
KathySS exclaims, "You have done an awesome job, lots of time and
organization went into this site. Your staff and
students will love it!"
KerryRo says, "I really like the idea of students associating
activities, etc., with colored folders"
KathySS says, "As teachers we love to color code :)"
JimL asks, "Thanks, Anne, very nice. Next up is Heidi Andreon.
Heidi?"
AnneC says, "Thanks everyone. Sorry the presentation was so long to
read."
LindaJG says, "Great organization. Students will love this."
BrianT says, "color coding is useful for visual learners, too."
HeidiA says, "Okay, I'm going to project my whole presentation to you
guys too. Here we go..."
HeidiA projects HeidiA's 387 presentation.
---------------
I created a WebQuest for my major project about the possibility of a
population control program in the United States. The project stems from
a book my class reads called Among the Hidden about a boy who is
considered illegal because he's a third child in a society that only
allows two children. Many questions arise about a government
controlling a person's right to reproduce. Thus, this WebQuest was
created to educate students about population control programs that exist
today and to apply that knowledge by taking a stance on this issue.
Before I continue, if you teach middle school or even high school, this
is a great book to teach. Many ethical issues are brought up making
great discussions!
The most important idea that I learned about making a WebQuest had to do
with time. First of all, the amount of time to make the actual physical
presentation of the WebQuest look nice was great. Sometimes I spent an
hour looking for an image that really wasn't that important to my site,
so now I appreciate quality web pages because I know the amount of time
it takes to make one look good. Also, the time it took to look for
resources was incredible. When creating a WebQuest, it is imperative
for the teacher to find quality web sites that their students can use.
Even though I know that there is a lot of useless information on the
web, that idea became more evident when searching for informative and
accurate web sites. In addition, even though many of the sites were
good, I had trouble finding sites that were appropriate for 6th graders.
The topic that I chose to do the WebQuest on was probably better suited
for older students; however, it did fit in with the book well. Many
articles discussed birth control and that was one area that I didn't
want to get into deeply with 12 year olds. I think that my web sites
are age appropriate, but I do worry that I may have missed something
inappropriate.
The next goal of mine regarding this WebQuest is figuring out how I m
going to have students complete this project without a computer lab. My
thought is to put students in groups of four based on who has internet
access at home. Then students can get together at someone's house to
complete the researching portion of the project. Initially, I will
present the WebQuest using the LCD projector, however, having students
find the means to look up the web sites and answer the questions will be
a chore. I don't want to make the completion of this assignment based
on who has a computer. Obviously, that wouldn't be fair.
Any suggestions would be very helpful!
Overall, creating this WebQuest was enjoyable, and I believe it will be
beneficial for my students. If anyone has a chance to make one, I
suggest you do!
Any questions?
---------------
JimL says, "If you want to read without the scrollling when somebody
types, use the "pasteboard" above."
LauraSto says, "It will be hard to complete without a computer lab.
Grouping the students based on internet access sounds
like a good idea."
KeryS has lost her link.
GingerK exclaims, "I really like the idea of exploring ideas from a
book. Very nicely done project!"
AnneC says, "I agree with the importance of finding credible web sites
for students. I also agree that it takes an incredible
amount of time."
KimKB says, "Good idea about working in groups - a lot of webquests have
a groupwork component, I think."
KathySS asks, "How many computers are in your classroom?"
KimMF says, "Great topic for your WebQuest, Heidi! This is a major
dilemma for families in China, I know."
HeidiA asks, "I only have one that only teachers use. Isn't that crazy?"
KimMF says, "Boy, does it take time, Anne. Especiially if you have a
slow connetction."
HeidiA says, "I learned a lot about this issue too, Kim."
JimL asks, "I wonder if you could contact some people from China, say
grad students here at UIUC to talk with your students about
those issues?"
LindaJG says, "Would make a great interdisciplinary unit with English &
Social Studies"
KimKB says, "Good idea, Linda"
KenaC says, "Most people have internet access thsese days and I don't
think that"
NancyBo says, "Is there a computer lab in your school? You could take
the class there."
HeidiA exclaims, "Great idea, Jim!"
KenaC says, "It will be all that impossible for the students to get this
done."
KeryS has connected.
KathySS says, "With one computer you could divide the class into groups.
One group could work on a part of the webquest while
another did other activities related to the book."
MarkCF exclaims, "I have used Chinese students from U of I before - it
worked great!"
HeidiA says, "Our lab is for computer classes only."
MaritaC asks, "Would your computer teacher allow this to be done during
class time?"
KimMF exclaims, "Must be a way!"
KerryRo says, "Sounds like you need an "airport"."
JuliaJ asks, "Could you do an aftersochool session in the lab?"
JimL asks, "Can you rotate groups through using your computer while
other groups do other things at that time?"
HeidiA says, "The computer teacher is teaching his classes."
KimKB asks, "could he spare 1 computer?"
MaritaC asks, "What are "his classes"?"
HeidiA says, "We were told at one point that our computer is for
teachers only."
KimMF exclaims, "Ahh! Good idea, Kerry. Wireless xlaptops for
everyone!"
NancyBo asks, "How about during his prep?"
KerryRo exclaims, "It's GRANT TIME!"
JimL asks, "Good problem solving, folks. Very nice project, Heidi.
Next up is Kim Baker. Kim?"
HeidiA says, "That sounds like a good thought, Nancy."
KimKB says, "sure"
HeidiA says, "Thanks."
KimKB says, "I'll be projecting my project in small chunks"
KimKB says, "I'll let you know when I'm done."

Kim Baker's Major Project Presentation
Project Description:
My project is a set of web pages, divided into grades 3, 4, and 5, which
will serve as an internet resource for teachers. The pages will be
linked to my school homepage.
---------------
KimKB projects major project pres2.
---------------
Importance/Learned
The most important thing about my project is that it will (hopefully) be
used as a resource by teachers. If a few teachers start using the
internet as a resouce with their classes, then more and more teachers
will get onboard and do so as well.
---------------
KimKB projects major project pres 2a.
---------------
I feel we have an excellent resource (the internet) that is going
unused. I tried to make my pages as user friendly as possible. I
refrained from using graphics, animation, etc. as I didn't want to
distract users from the links available.
---------------
KimKB projects major project pres3.
---------------
In completing this project, I learned what a large task it is to create
and maintain a website. I realized how many educational websites are out
there that teachers may not know exist. In evaluating the sites, I
quickly learned to differentiate between what is "cute" and what is
educational and inquiry-based.
---------------
KimKB projects major project pres 3a.
---------------
The most important lesson I learned was simply not to give up when some
aspect of the computer doesn't come easily to me. I often jumped right
into the web page design and then had to start over because I didn't
follow the directions in the user's manual.
---------------
KimKB projects major project pres4.
---------------
Plan:
To maintain my pages, I plan to check the links myself and to have my
students check them in their teams. By check, I mean checking to see
that they are indeed still links to web pages.
---------------
KimKB projects major project pres 4a.
---------------
I would like to create a teacher resource page to include activities
teachers can do with their students (web quests, etc.), but this will be
a long-term goal. To invite parents and students to use my pages, I will
create a scavenger hunt (an excellent suggestion from a fellow CTER
student) which can be completed at home.
---------------
KimKB projects major project pres5.
---------------
The scavenger hunt will involve using the websites on the pages to
answer questions. It will be optional, as not every student has a
computer.
---------------
KimKB projects major project pres6.
---------------
Finally, in learning about creating web sites, I have also started
working on a personal web page, which will include 4th grade curriculum
information, our class newsletter, and student work. THE END!
---------------
KimKB says, "Any suggestions are welcome"
JimL says, "Did you find any web sites that were BOTH cute and
educational? :-)"
KimKB says, "Some"
HeidiA says, "Kim, you really included a lot of links. I bet that took
some time."
KimMF asks, "Scavenger hunts are great. How will you conduct yours?"
LauraSto says, "Great way to interest parents and students - the
scavenger hunt."
KimKB says, "I tried to focus on the educational stuff, of course"
KimKB says, "For the scavenger hunt, I plan to list questions with links
that the students"
KimKB says, "can use to find answers listed somewhere on the page"
LauraSto gets Note_51066 from the vending machine.
KathySS exclaims, "The idea of a resource page for teachers is great!"
KimKB says, "Yes, my pages is geared towards kids, and I found so many"
KimKB says, "awesome links for teachers that I feel this is a necessary
component"
MarkCF asks, "Kim - I really like the way there are different web pages
everyday. Will you keep updating that so it changes every
month?"
KimKB says, "Right now, there are 31 links, I hope to"
KimKB says, "change them once per grading period"
KimKB says, "Hopefully students can make suggestions for cool links"
KimKB says, "teachers to"
JimL asks, "Very nice, KimKB. Next up is Kim Fitzer KimMF. Ready KimMF?"
KathySS exclaims, "Sounds like your district has a free webminer!"
LindaJG says, "Good idea to get links from students"
MaritaC exclaims, "My kids are always coming up with great stuff too!"
JimL looks around for KimMF.
KimMF says, "I'm ready."
GeoffF drinks a sip of energizing fizziness.
JimL says, "Go for it KimMF"
KimMF projects Kim's Major Project.
---------------
My major Project consists of examining the asynchronous learning
experience and evaluating the viability of using it in a traditional
classroom setting. For the project, I examined two ALN platforms:
Blackboard.com and WebCT.com. I wanted to compare the two platforms and
rate them interms of 1) Ease of Use 2) Accessibility for all users and
3) Robustness of services and features.
I found that Blackboard.com, which offers a free course set-up option,
was very easy to use, and has a lot of great features. I particularly
liked the interface, which allowed me to create the course with very
little trouble. In fact, the only trouble I had was when I had to upload
documents from my school server. Worked just fine from home, though.
WebCT, however, is another story. The only "free" option that it allows
you to do is to adopt a preexisting course, and slightly alter it to
fit your needs. I have not done this, since there was only one course
that even remotely fit my needs. They will send me the course materials
at a later date. So, I couldn't set it up right away, as I could in
Blackboard.com
They do point you toward purchasing the package, and I don't know how
much a license is, because the account representative has contacted me
to tell me that she will be unavailable for the next few days. Guess
they don't want to sell their product that badly.
I learned a lot from doing this project, and unfortunately, the thing I
spent the most time on, my major project website, can't be accessed yet,
so noone has seen it. I was working on an older version of Dreamweaver,
and I think that was part of the problem. Also, I made some big
mistakes, like using folders and subfolders, which broke all of my
links, twice. And the videos I used won't load. But, now I have to go
about figuring out why. And that will be an ongoing project.
What I would like to do is to test out the Blackboard.com platform this
fall in one of my Computer Graphics classes (provided the server at my
school allows it) and use the other as the control. I am interested in
seeing if the experience of using the online tools will enhance
performance in my students. If it does, I will introduce it to the rest
of the faculty in an inservice next spring. Exciting stuff!
If we had time, I'd take you to the site.
Any Questions?
---------------
vicky [guest] says, "Kim-"
vicky [guest] says, "Vicky Says-I know lots about Blackboard-email me
with questions vromano@knox.edu"
AnneC exclaims, "I'm going to check out Blackboard, com!"
KathySS says, "I think I will too."
KimMF exclaims, "Oh, great Vicky. I'd like to get more info. I really
liked it!"
JimL says, "we'll look forward to seeing your site, Kim. Sounds like
you're learning the hard way about relative links vs.
absolute links."
KimMF says, "WebCT was a disappointment. And I'm really sorry noone got
to see my site."
KathySS says, "I understand your problem with links :)"
JimL says, "When its up, send email to the cter4@mail.ed.uiuc.edu list."
KimMF says, "Yes. Well, I still really don't know the difference."
YvetteK says, "I loved using Blackboard-I don't know much about WebCT.
Thanks for the insight."
TeresaLG goes out.
TeresaLG's personal recorder (recording) goes out.
JimL asks, "Many thanks Kim. Next up is Laura Stoffel. Laura?"
TeresaLG has arrived.

LauraSto says, "Ready."

---------------
Over the past four years, I have felt like I did not have enough contact
with the parents of my students. I teach about 380 students, so I don't
always get to talk to each parent as much as I'd like. I have tried
sending home a newsletter in the past, but I did not feel that that
particular newsletter was successful. I wanted to create an accessible,
easy-to-navigate online newsletter that any interested parent and/or
student could read to find out what we had been doing in their child's
fine arts class.
---------------
TeresaLG gets Note_51067 from the vending machine.
LauraSto projects laura#2.
---------------
The goals of my project were extremely straight-forward:
1. Create an accessible website that describes the lessons and
activities currently being done in each grade levels' fine arts class.
2. Provide pictures of artwork done by the students (I don't
have any access to this currently, but I will add it once school begins
again.)
3. Display pictures from our performances (we do five
performances each year - a k/1 show, a 2/3 show, a 4/5 show, and two
chorus performances.).
4. Provide links to the artist and composers of the month.
These activities are extra-credit, but I thought that putting them
online might make some students who haven't been interested take a look
at the information!
---------------
LauraSto projects laura#3.
---------------
I created my website with an example of the lessons and activities we
did in May. I think that the set-up of the site will make it easy for
students and parents to keep informed about what has been happening in
fine arts class. I plan to update the site each month with the new
lessons and activities we did that month.
---------------
LauraSto projects laura#4.
---------------
I can't begin to say what was the most important thing I learned.
Creating a webpage was a new thing for me, so I just experimented until
I thought I had the program somewhat figured out. The hardest part will
be keeping it updated with pictures of projects and other information.
---------------
LauraSto says, "The end. Sorry if I projected them too fast."
HeidiA exclaims, "Laura, I'm amazed at all the classes you teach. This
will be a great source for parents and students!"
LauraSto exclaims, "I hope it will be. I just hope they use it!"
JimL says, "Keep in mind the idea of getting some students to help you
update it, so it doesn't become an overwhelming burden for
you."
LauraSto exclaims, "I've had that idea...sounds great to me!"
HeidiA exclaims, "I love the "artist of the month" idea!"
TeresaLG goes out.
TeresaLG's personal recorder (recording) goes out.
LauraSto says, "I've found that, in teaching everything else, history of
composers and artists fall by the wayside. This had been
a way for me to incorporate it."
LindaJG says, "I can see where it would be difficult to communicate to
that many parents. What a great way to do it."
JimL says, "Very nice job, Laura."
LauraSto says, "Thanks."
KimMF says, "Laura, you're so right about that. Appreciation is hard to
fit in all the time."
TeresaLG has arrived.
TeresaLG's personal recorder (recording) has arrived.
vicky [guest] says, "Vicky says-thank goodness for fine arts-we need
more of you all not less"
JimL says, "Ann Bohnsack is presumably Ann Orwig now, and is on her
honeymoon."
LauraSto says, "Thanks, Vicky."
JimL exclaims, "So, we're DONE! Time to celebrate! Everyone get a
bottle of champagne (or soda if you don't drink
champagne) from the supplies!"
JimL says, "Ann will present later, probably via email."
GeoffF drinks a swallow of ice cold soda.

YvetteK gets Champagne_51075 from the vending machine.
KimMF drinks a mouthful of piquante velvet.
LindaJG gets Vending_Machine_51076 from the vending machine.
MaritaC gets Champagne_51077 from the vending machine.
JimL says, "In the meantime, we can continue the discussion of what's
the best web editor. Michael says that that will be an early
activity in his class as well."
LindaJG gets Champagne_51078 from the vending machine.
GingerK says, "SWIG CHAMPAGNE_51071"
BrianT exclaims, "Hey, Linda. Where are you going with that vending
machine?!"
JimL says, "commands have to be preceded by a slash /"
vicky [guest] says, "Vicky usually just codes but is trying to learn
Dreamweaver this summer"
HeidiA says, "Yes, Jim. I would like to know."
TeresaLG has connected.
KeryS exclaims, "I had a difficult time getting composer to do what I
wanted!"
JimL says, "As I said earlier, Netscape composer is free but limited.
What else are people using? I heard about Frontpage and
Dreamweaver."
KimMF asks, "About web editors. Whats the deal with Dreamweaver? Is it
because I just have an older version that it doesn't work?"
BrianT says, "Dreamweaver is the best I've used. I used Adobe PageMill
for my project because I have it at home."
LauraSto says, "I didn't mind composer."
JimL says, "I've liked PageMill."
GeoffF says, "I used front page and liked it but have not used any other"
AnneC says, "I do okay with Composer."
vicky [guest] says, "Dreamweaver is now up to Version 4 but you have to
be careful as it saves stuff to the folders it wants
and will add code you cannot take out."
KimMF says, "I guess I need to really delve into it."
vicky [guest] says, "Vicky is You"
JimL says, "I especially liked Claris HomePage, but they're not making
it anymore - an orphan web editor - so sad :-("
KenaC asks, "Brian T are you using a MAC?"
HeidiA says, "I'm not that sophisticated yet so Composer was good for
me."
AmyBC asks, "What is "user-friendly" but with more options that
Composer?"
BrianT says, "Composer is OK until you want to do the more advanced HTML
editing. Then one quickly sees its limitations."
KathySS says, "I use a combination of Dreamweaver, HTML, and composer.
If I can't get what I want with one I try it in something
else."
HeidiA says, "Good question, Amy."
KimMF asks, "So, Kathy, do you just open the page in one of the other
editors?"
NancyBo says, "I have Dreamweaver 4. One of the problems I had was that
it didn't respond when I clicked the mouse."
NancyBo says, "Then I downloaded the update and it seems to work fine."
vicky [guest] says, "There are lots of bugs still with Dreamweaver 4 and
I do use Notepad to view code"
MarkCF says, "I always use ClarisHomePage. I think it is awesome, and
easy to use (except for frames)"
JimL says, "Michael said he's planning for you to review two web
editors, one you're already using and one you aren't and do a
compare and contrast."
KerryRo asks, "Has anyone else used Microsoft Publisher?"
GingerK asks, "Is Dreamweaver expensive? Or is it something I can
download?"
KathySS says, "I save it to a folder on the desktop & then open it with
one of the other editors."
JuliaJ says, "I used Publisher and frontpage. Liked them both."
AmyBC says, "I used MS Word to edit HTML when using composer. But using
more than one program can be tricky..."
vicky [guest] says, "Macromedia makes Dreamweaver"
BrianT says, "Dreamweaver on the Mac runs about $150 or so, I think."
vicky [guest] says, "Do you like it Brian"
LauraSto asks, "What programs are available for Mac?"
KathySS says, "I like to edit HTML in notepad."
JuliaJ says, "There is a trial version of Dreamweaver you can download.
See if you like it."
YvetteK says, "I didn't mind composer until I had to insert javascript.
I think I will go back to FrontPage."
GingerK says, "Thanks for the tip Julia"
NancyBo says, "The Education version of Dreamweaver was $149.95. I
happen to have the receit right here."
AmyBC says, "Jim, do you know when we start 490Net? Will we be getting
some info? I plan a short vacation, and didn't want to miss
