Problem: I get to my class pages on our
server and check my email but I can't get
to Microsoft's Main page.
What I Did:
Beginner: I opened up Netscape and went
to a few of the places that I frequently
go to and all of the pages seemed to be
working fine. I could also check my email.
However, when I tried to go to a few new
places I kept getting errors. A few
minutes later i didn't have any more
problems.
Advanced I used a "ping"
utility that allows you to put in web
names of a lot of different places. At
first i was only able to get info back
from computers that were on our local
network but later i was able to get
responses from all of the sites except
from Microsoft.
Solution: At first I thought the Internet
connection was down from our building to
the Internet because I could access every
machine that was local.
Beginner: What was confusing was
that many of the pages I normally go to
were showing up because they were saved
on my local machine in somthing called a
cache (whicy my admin says makes browsing
faster because it saves recent files for
a while so you don'thave to keep getting
the same info). when I thought I was
really seeing things on the internet AI
was actually just viewing files from my
computer which was misleading. Next time
I am going to try differnet webpages that
I haven't visited frequently.
Advanced: What was confusing was that the
:"ping" program didn't give me
any info back from Microsoft. That didn't
make sense so I went and asked my network
administrator what was going on and she
confirmed that the people who give us
internet access were having problems for
a while but that was not why I didn't get
a response from Microsoft. What I didn't
know was that some companies don't show
up on the "ping" utility. She
said I was on the right track but should
make sure I only "ping" places
I know are should work when I try to test
to see if the network is running"
