TAPPED IN Registration Instructions

(complete before 12:00 noon July 13!)

(you may want to print this Web page out to use while accessing the site)

** Note: Use Netscape 4.05 for these exercises. Internet Explorer (3.0 or 4.0) has too many bugs with TAPPED IN. **

ENABLING JAVA and JAVASCRIPT ON YOUR VERSION OF NETSCAPE COMMUNICATOR OR NAVIGATOR

To use TAPPED IN properly, the version of Netscape Communicator or Navigator you use must be "enabled" for Java and Javascript, the language TAPPED IN uses for synchronous dialog.  To check this:

1) Open Netscape Communicator or Navigator.

2) GO to "Edit" then "Preferences..." in the top Netscape menu.

3) Click on the arrow beside "Advanced" in the left "Category" window frame.

4) Check to see if the boxes next to "Enable Java" and "Enable Javascript" at the right   have x's in them.  If not, click in the boxes to put x's in them.

5) Click OK to close window.

** TAPPED IN recommends at least 10,000 K minimum memory in Netscape to run its JAVA effectively -- better 12,000 or 15,000 K.  (Macintosh users only)

REGISTERING FOR A TAPPED IN MEMBERSHIP

1) Click on the URL for TAPPED IN:  www.tappedin.sri.com

(Later, you can use the link to TAPPED IN under "Class Communication" at the bottom of any course page to access TAPPED IN.)

2) Click "Steps" under "Join Us" in the blue banner at left

3) Click 1. "Become a member" at right.

4) Fill out the form. Select OTHER under PROGRAM, and type "UIUC-CTER" in the field below PROGRAM.

5) In the verification field type "Jim Levin j-levin@uiuc.edu".

6) Click "Submit Request" at the end. (You can modify your information later if you wish.)

7) SRI will send an e-mail confirmation of your membership along with a user log-in name and password.  This may take a while, usually less than a day on work days.

LOGGING IN AS A MEMBER
-- after you receive your member name and password

1) Click on the TAPPED IN link under "Class Communication" at the bottom of any EdPsy 387 page.  (The homepage will do for now.)  You'll notice that the URL begins with moo not www.

2) Fill in your new log-in name and password.

3) You have two buttons underneath:

  • Open a Web Window
  • Connect via TAPestry (the JAVA-operated window)

4) Try clicking the "TAPestry" option first.

If your Netscape (4.05) crashes on you, try logging on again.  If the problem persists, try downloading TAPPED IN's non-JAVA communication window. For Macs, this is MUDDweller .  (See links under "Configuring Your Macintosh"). For Windows, this is GMUD or Pueblo. (See links under "Configuring Windows 95")

Using TAPPED IN
If all goes well, you should see two new windows open:

  • A Web window with a building diagram ("room map") of the Reception area
  • A smaller Java window, "TAPestry", which allows you to type commands, move around the TAPPED IN world, and communicate in real-time with others in TAPPED IN.

You will normally be dealing with two separate windows in TAPPED IN at the same time. These two windows will automatically pop frontward or backward depending on actions you take.  An action you make in one should update the other.  To get from one window to the other, just click on the window in the background.

Almost all typing of commands and "Chat" dialog will take place in the TAPestry window (Java applet);  movement from room to room ("navigation") is most easily done in the Web window, clicking on places you wish to go.

CHANGING YOUR USER PROFILE

When you registered, you entered some information as prompted.  If you now would like to see that information (what others will read about you) and modify it, follow this procedure:

1) In the TAPestry window, type ID  <your log-in name> to see the current information TAPPED IN has on you.

If you want to add or change something, type the following in the TAPestry window ...

2) Type PASSWORD <old password> <new password> to change your assigned password

3) Type DESCRIBE ME AS <your log-in name   is a teacher ...>  with more information about yourself.  Others will read only what you type after "AS".

Example:

DESCRIBE ME AS PaulS is the TA for Jim Levin's EdPsy 387 course Ö

FINDING THE CTER ROOM (first timers)

You automatically enter TAPPED IN in the Reception area (unless you specify otherwise).

1) Click on the Elevator on the room diagram of the Reception to move up and down the "building".  There are 7 floors in addition to the Reception floor.

2) Click on 5th Floor, where the CTER office is.

3) Click on Exit E (east wing).

4)  Click on room E511.

5) In the TAPestry window, type:  SETHOME

This specifies the CTER room as your entry point after log-in from now on.  To get back from anywhere else on the TAPPED IN site, type HOME.

6) Try a little navigation practice:

  • Click on "out" on the E511 room diagram to leave the room and go out into the hall. (You may choose to wander a bit.) Click on E511 to go back in the room.
  • Type RECEPTION  in the TAPestry window to go directly ("teleport") to the reception area. (The map window will update to show the Reception.) Test your new "home" option, by typing HOME from reception, or click on the Home link.  You'll find yourself back in E511 (our CTER room).
  • Click on Floorplan on the right side of the Web window to see a plan of the entire CTER building.  You can click anywhere on it to go there.

7) Type @QUIT to log off of TAPPED IN.

Here is a "cheat sheet" of the basic TAPPED IN commands (and a few more advanced ones, which you can ignore if you want).

For some advanced experience before Monday's tour, try the site's Treasure Hunt and read up on some Q&As.
