I like it because it is concise, it allows you to go in the directions you would be interested in, and the graphics are eye pleasing, yet small enough not to take a lot of time to load.

Dr. Levin,

Two examples of personal homepages that were as close to exemplary as I could find.

Mark's home page at http://www.csun.edu/~hbhlt001/ was the best developed page I found, both graphics and content. However it had a "big time" problem with copyright infringement.

James Hafke's Legal Home http://oeonline.com/~conan2/ has an interesting but simple layout, with a link to a more detailed bio page.

The good personal web page that I found is: http://www.access.digex.net/~jeschaad/

I chose this site because I think it is colorful and fun. It has also been recently updated. Once you let it completely download, there are lots of links to explore!

I think my friend Sarah's page is a good example of an exemplary personal web page. It has been evolving for a while now, and she has obviously put a lot of work, thought, and soul (self?) into it, as well as sponsoring information that she considers interesting.

http://www.seraph.org/newindex.html

I also quite like Kate's page; it has a sense of fun that is backed up by good design skills (imo) and unmarred by unnecessary busy-ness or complexity. (Though, like Kate herself, I think the simplicity is a lot more visual than actual - both have a lot of depth.) There are a LOT of colors on the page, but this is one of the few sites I've seen where this doesn't trouble me; it has more of a rainbow feel (funny, that) than a clashing mixed palette feel.

http://www.kathleen.net/

This isn't a personal page, but this site came to mind when you were discussing scrolling in class. This site relies heavily on horizontal (sidescrolling) rather than vertical scrolling. I think the virtual screen used to be *very* wide, and i mailed them with my concerns about it, and now it's just a little wider than my screen. It's some design firm.

Subject: EDPSY387 : Finding a personal Web Page

Dr. Levin,

This was a difficult assignment in that there are many personal web sites to choose from (over 70,000 on Yahoo alone) and no easy way to browse through these since no 'exemplary' search criteria exists...

However, I think that I have found two sites that contain elements of what I consider to be a good personal web site.

The url's are as follows:

http://homepage.interaccess.com/~imsireal/
and
http://members.aol.com/djrant/

I like both of these because they separate their site into logical groups: personal background, hobbies, links pages, and professional issues.

The first site has a very simplistic start page that is easy to navigate and is clear about where the links will take a visitor. I also like that the site is not cluttered with gratuitous graphics and animations. Ahough the site is not finished and several of the links lead to pretty dull pages I really like the format of the site. Furthermore, every page has a small navigation bar on it so the site doesn't require the user to use the back arrow constantly.

The second site is a bit more showy but it still has a simple, effective main page. Small, descriptive pictures of each category guide the visitor about. Each page contains links to the other pages but not in a navigation bar style. The site has a hit counter which is something nice for a web designer to know if the pages he/she created are useful to anyone. I also like how he has mixed links in with his writing. This creates a hypertext 'atmosphere' where the reader feels like an active participant. Finally I like that he has included a 'Rush' tribute since they have been my favorite band for the past 15 years :>

Hi, Dr. Levin,

Among many personal homepages I visited, I think the pages of two people I know are very impressive. One is the hompage of Prof. Burbules in the Department of Educational Policy Studies:

http://www.ed.uiuc.edu/facstaff/burbules/NickB.html

I guess his page is the only one with the most resourceful links to search engines, reference, educational theories, schools of education and computer information, etc. It's still under construction, but it's overwhelming in information. Under his instruction, I collected thousands of informative URLs for him last semester. But he doesn't link them now. His design itself is a good example too.

Another homepage is:

http://www.students.uiuc.edu/~y-wang8

This page is colorful, simple but clear and rich enough to present the person. I love the links to classic Chinese poems in both English and Chinese. I think we may learn to build up a homepage like this one soon.

Thanks and best regards.

Here is the URL I selected:
http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/8568/

The purposes of designing a personal homepage are quite varied. Some people use it for information exchange or sharing; some use it for other purposes, such as putting their resume for job reference, introducing themselves for making friends through the web. I think this is the page for the latter purpose. The designers, BrVhRt and K-GuY, provide only three links in their front page. The first two are the sources for chatting and e-card (IRC and e-kiss hotline) and the last one is the info about them. It seems to imply "let's make friends first and send your kisses to us", or "knowing us is one of your optionals in this big circle of internet friends". I like this page because it is pretty straighforward and simple. Plus, the font is big which is good for my shortsighted. However, due to big bytes of gif/jpeg files and my slow modem, loading it is quite time-consuming.

Dear Dr. Levin & fellow class members,

...

(3) Intersting personal web pages:
(3A) http://www.beckman.uiuc.edu/faculty/banich.html This web page has basic information about the background of Dr Banich, a list of recent publications with links to other sites that further describe her affiliation with the educational units within the University. Each section is begun with a heading in a different color (non-linked) to distinguish it from text and is at the same time pleasing to the eye.

There is a section for related links to the Banish Lab. When this is linked there is an introduction to the lab but it does not have much information. The second link which is:
http://www.beckman.uiuc.edu/Banichlab/ takes a while to download but serves as a nice table of contents with content linked to each section.

As an example, page one has a section which describes the work that Dr Banish does in cognitive neuroscience and links back to the menu at the end of a topic:
http://www.beckman.uiuc.edu/Banichlab/attention2.html

(3B) Another page that I though might be interesting but was a bit disappointing is Ted William's page. It does state that it is still under construction but it takes quite a while to download and when it finally does the front page serves only as a directory to other sites. Could it be that the page is being developed for the next generation of speedy computers & modems?

(3C) Another page which has an unbelievable number of links:
http://www.pso.uiuc.edu/zorkahn/

Thanks for your time, see you in class,
Andrea

Dear Prof Levin: I have visited more than 20 personal homepages in the past two weeks. Here are two examples that were close to exemplary as I could find. These two were simple, interesting, one is full of graphic, and the other one is text based. I borrowed from these two to develop my homepage early this year.

Hi, Dr. Levin,

Week 2 Homework assignment
<exemplary personal web pages>

URL : http://lrs.ed.uiuc.edu/students/hchoi8/2ndweek.html

I have visited some of my friends' homepages. Most of them are made at a beginner's level, not at a professional's. Though they may not be very 'exemplary', they have some points to consider when we begin to build our own homepage.

<1> http://www.mit.edu/people/won/home.html

This web page is very simple, to be more straightforward, too simple. There are no graphics and no background images, even no frames and tables. Simplicity has benefits, it makes us wait less until we can see the web page. One of the biggest problem of this page is that it is full of links, which were not well-organized. Using links is a good strategy of homepage design, but to fulfill its purpose of use, the arrangement of links have to be more structured to give the visitors more information.

<2> http://www.gsia.cmu.edu/andrew/sk76/

This page is simple, too, but more organized than the first one. The graphics the web page the builder used are also simple, which don't flash other people's eyes too much. It provides the basic information about the owner, like how he looks, what he is studying, how's his classmates and advisor, and how's Pittsburg where he lives. But the purpose of making this web page is vague. To give the visitors useful resources, to give information about him to job markets, or what?

<3> http://www.mit.edu/people/sychung/home.html

Nice graphical images which are related with his major give good impression as well as let us know what his study area is like.
