Newsweb

Organizer: Brian Hanson-Harding

The best thing about this project: This project provides a central clearinghouse for high school newspapers on the web. The organizer is a New Jersey teacher of English and journalism. In addition to setting up the links to on-line student publications around the country, he has also set up on-line press conferences, an editor/ adviser roundtable, a list of journalism-related links, and a directory of members. The site is a good place from which to establish communication with school newspaper staffs around the country.

The worst thing about this project: The magnitude of it all! With interest in on-line publishing increasing so rapidly, it seems to be a gargantuan task to keep the listings and links updated. I have registered the Springfield High School newspaper, The Senator, with Newsweb, but the most recent issues are not yet cited.

What I would change to improve this project (and why): I'm not sure I could change much. If Hanson-Harding teachings English and advises a print publication (as I do), he has his hands full. It seems to me that setting up and maintaining such a clearinghouse would constitute a full-time job in itself! I admire his efforts and what seems to be a thorough effort to get high school journalists involved. I'm pushing my own staff to contribute to Newsweb and to use some of the resources that the project has set up.
