This course will help teachers learn to use long-distance electronic networks for learning and teaching. It is a project-oriented course, with participants involved in several network-based learning projects, connecting their own students with students elsewhere in Illinois, across the country and around the world. Initially participants will join in ongoing network activities while learning the technical skills of telecommunications, and then they will propose and conduct their own projects.
No previous experience with telecommunications is required for this course. However participants will need to have some prior experience with word processing. To conduct the network interactions which will be a substantial portion of the course, participants will need access to a microcomputer and either a direct Internet connection or a phone line and a modem (14.4K baud modem preferred). Limited toll-free phone access will be available for those without direct network connections.
The class will meet on the Urbana-Champaign campus during four Saturdays (9 AM - 4 PM) during the semester, with the rest of the course conducted via the network:
