Creating web pages for EdPsy 387

Creating a personal web page from the template

  1. Get the template from the server:
    1. start up a web browser (Netscape, for instance)
    2. enter the URL for your template: http://lrs.ed.uiuc.edu/students/[your netid]/index.html
  2. Edit the file
    1. File -> Edit Page
    2. Replace the TEXT IN UPPER CASE with your text
    3. double click on the picture icon, and put your netid in place of YOURNETID (leave the ".jpeg")
    4. replace the email link (select the email address, click on the "link" icon, put your netid in place of YOURNETID, leave the "mailto:" and "@uiuc.edu")
    5. add anything you want, delete anything you don't want
  3. Save the file locally as "index.html": File -> Save As then put it where you can later find it, either on the local hard disk, on a floppy disk, etc.
  4. FTP the file to the LRS server
  5. Verify that everything works by starting up a new browser window (File -> New -> Navigator in Netscape 4), and entering the URL again http://lrs.ed.uiuc.edu/students/[your netid]/index.html (click the "Reload" button)
If you're on a computer that has a connection to the Internet, you'll want to leave three "windows" open that you can rotate among: 1) the browser editing window, 2) the FTP application window, and 3) the browser navigation window. The editing process is then:
  1. Make a change in the editing window then save the changes
  2. FTP the file to the server
  3. verify in the Navigator window that the changes are on the server (click the RELOAD button)

Modifying a web page that you have stored locally

It's a good idea to keep "local" copies of the files you have on a remote server. Then you can work on them even if you're not connected to the server (for example, if you're working at home and don't want to tie up the phone)
  1. Open the file
    1. Start up a web browser
    2. open the file (File -> Open -> Page in Navigator for Navigator 4)
  2. Edit the file
  3. Save the file locally
  4. Then, when you're done making changes, FTP the file to the server and verify that it looks okay, as specified in the steps 4 and 5 above

Creating a new web page

To create a new web page, just start up your browser (Netscape), select File -> New -> Blank Page (You may also want to explore File -> New -> Blank Page from Template and File -> New -> Blank Page from Wizard. You be connected to the Internet to use either of these.)
