Since my major interest in nursing, I am most impressed by the capabilities of the following site at found at http://parsons.ab.umd.edu/~dclee/inhale.html. I find this site to show the potential uses of the web for the nursing field to be exciting, challenging, and very thought provoking. I hope this is the type of site you were looking for in this assignment. Also, in terms of a URL for better understanding of HTML, I liked the way the following was presented as an interactive tutorial for new users/creaters of web pages. http://www.davesite.com/webstation/html/. Thanks, Jan Waite

Though they are not as sophisticated as I can see, they are a very good kickoff. One of them is: http://www.itp.berkeley.edu/~thorne/HumanResources.html This website includes learning resources for several languages such as Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, etc. Some of the items are highly hypermedia-oriented.

Date: Sun, 26 Jan 1997 16:58:41 -0600 To: j-levin@uiuc.edu From: Rosina Neginsky <r-negin@uiuc.edu> Subject: EdPsy 387 Dear Dr. Levin, Search Engines. As far as the search for interesting and useful sites in education is concerned, I did a number of searches in all five search engines. I was interested in finding as much information as possible about museums in Saint Petersburg, in Russia. Why? Because it might be a precious educational information in teaching culture and civilization and also might a useful preparation for the study tours to StP. I typed "Museums, Saint Petersburg, Russia." I hoped that if I typed these three words, it would limit my search to Museums in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It did not really work as I hoped it would. I began by trying to understand the principal of the organization of each search engine. I am not sure how successful I was. In Yahoo, I found 2 categories and 67 sites matches. My impression was that Yahoo is organized by subject matter, and each site is supposed to contain either the word "Russia," or "Saint Petersburg," or "Museums." [Please let me know if it is a right assumption.] I did not find anything of interest to me in Yahoo. In Excite, I received a message: "Sorry, your search produced no result." My impression was that Excite is organized by relevance and that the site does not contain any of words that I typed, but should just contain some relevant information. (?) In Infoseek, I found 165065 items, but I could limit my choice by choosing one of the options "Russia," "Museums and parks," "Russian Language," "History of Russia." I decided not to choose "Museums and parks," because it contains the information about museums all over the world. I looked at "Russia" and "History of Russia." I did not find what I looked for, but I found an interesting site linked to "History of Russia:" http:/www.umn.edu/~ipavlovs/Russia/Info/History/history.html (I am not copying this address, because I am writing to you from home, and I do not have yet an access to NETSCAPE from home. I will paste and copy it tomorrow.) As far as the organization of the Infoseek is concerned, I had an impression that it is organized by relevance. In WebCrawler, I found 353 matches, organized by relevance, but I did not find anything that I searched for. The most successful was the search in Lycos. Though I found 23896 relevant documents about "museums," "saint," "Petersburg," "Russia," "Russian,"..., I found a site called Russian Museums (http://www.museum.ru/) that was linked to the site "museums." This site gave me a listing of 139 museums in Saint Petersburg and of 37 museums for StP region (http://www.museum.ru/defengl.htm) with names and addresses. Unfortunately I did not get either any description of the collections of museums, or their pictures, or a picture sampling objects in these museums, but what I found was a good start and could serve well for a study tour to Saint Petersburg. For my particular search, Lycos was the most successful search engine. (Why? Why was I not able to find the same sites in other search engines?) I think, I should stop now. Thank you. Rosina Neginsky
