Subject: personal web page

Here is a personal web page that I find interesting:
http://people.netscape.com/powers/index.html

The individual happens to be my sister's
boyfriend, but he also works for Netscape...so I
usually assume that he knows quite a bit about web
pages and have, in the past, asked him for advice.

Notably, it's in 2 languages, and he's given pointers to where the text is more complete in Japanese (not that mine's good enough to let me switch). He provides some information about current and past classes, and some personal biography as well. Besides, he's a friend of mine. :-) Yutaka has used the college pages as a way to introduce his students and other people around his campus to the Web, and vice versa. There's information here about workshops and projects he's participated in, presented without his seeming to inflate his accomplishments too much. He's included links to some pictures he's taken, but most of his pages load fairly quickly (esp. given how slow the school's server is). There may still a couple of "vanity" efforts here, like a JavaScript marquee, but these are clearly marked before entry. There's also the beginnings of a "virtual reunion" page (links to ex-students and ex-colleagues) - a great idea for someone who knows people all over the world. My own pages are at: http://www.ed.uiuc.edu/students/jbuell I haven't yet put up a redirect from my directory on the lrs server, but will do so soon. JB
Date: Sun, 14 Sep 1997 10:49:58 -0500 From: Elnour Hamad <hamad@students.uiuc.edu> To: j-levin@uiuc.edu Subject: Home Pages The home page I liked most was selected before by one of 387 previous students as an exemplary home page. I also found it as well organized, and easy to tour through. The main menue was put on the left hand side of the first page, and the menue almost covers every aspect one would want to know about the person. The page also, gives the visitor an impression about the person as a serious person, opposed to other home pages that starts with some kind of funny starts, that would most probably drive the visitor away form taking things inside this kind of home pages as serious. I also liked this home page simplicity, and the quick way it responses with. Elnour Hamad http://www.december.com/john/vita/personal.html

I just finished to write the message to you on the internet e-mail service and when i wanted to send it I couldn't. So even if now I hate computer technology more than ever I send again by the simple way I know. Sorry I'm upset a little bit. So I found two interesting homepage. The first one is, http://www.kinga.com/ THis is an Hungarian women homepage and mainly the viewer can found lot of information about Hungary. There are things in Hungarian and English so it is good for people who interested in this country and also for Hungarian people who doesn't live in Hungary but still wants to keep the connection with their motherland. As I went through some of the themes she offered I recognized that her homepage includes same information I saw on Yahoo last year. So probably she asked permission of those companies, people to use their information. I also could see some Hungarian people personal homepage who are mostly lives in different countries. The only thing I missed Kinga personal homepage or any introduction, picture of her. I think maybe she is asked for to put together allof the information and create an Hungarian Homepage but then why it is under her name? The other homepage I liked is an 12 years old English boy homepage. the first thing what took my attention was the visual outlook. The address: http://ep.open.ac.uk/~andy/phil.html I liked how this boy organized his homepage regarding to his age level. He seems to me open and friendly and somebody who wants to use the internet not for business but for make connections with other kids all over the world. That's it. Sincerelly! Katalin

I looked through quite a few strange/boring/overloaded/ web pages until I found this one: http://www.students.uiuc.edu/~r-chang2/index.html I liked it because a) it downloaded FAST b) it was well-organized c) it had this cute feature, where you type your name and the computer remembers it (maybe, my standards are not that high.) d) it was funny e) it contained some interesting links that WORKED! f) it was easy to read (good graphic design) g) it was created by a UIUC student ...See you in class, Alina

Hi, Professor Levin: The following URL is for personal homepage which I think is good. http://cogsci.uiuc.edu/~jycha/ It is really well-designed. firstly, it contains many useful links to linguistics-related fields, which provides a good database for researches. secondly, besides linguistics part, it also has interactive links like chat-room and chalk-board, as well as some other internet-based information. moreover, the author is very thoughtful to provide two versions of his homepages: one with frames and the other without. For people who don't like frames much, it is really a good design. by the way, i created my own homepage and put it in lrs.ed.uiuc.edu server. the URL for my own homepage is http://lrs.ed.uiuc.edu/students/k-tai. --kuei-fen

The content of the site is also captivating--probably a good site for good references. Even though there is no bio of the author, a viewer can clearly see this person's interests and concerns--his message is conveyed well.
Date: Wed, 17 Sep 1997 09:34:57 -0500 From: Michael Weinstein <maweinst@students.uiuc.edu> MIME-Version: 1.0 To: j-levin@uiuc.edu Subject: home page The homepage that I like is under the ILIR webpage. Go to student's homepages and look up Melissa Angeline. I like how this page is set up. The categories are on the left hand side and you can just click on them and go to the location you want. The opening screen is colorful and she divides her professional and personal info well. Mike
Date: Thu, 18 Sep 1997 01:35:24 -0500 (CDT) From: smita garg <s-garg@students.uiuc.edu> To: j-levin@uiuc.edu Subject: assignment 2 Dear Dr. Levin, After much web-serfing i managed to find some sites that i kind of liked- can't say that i liked them a lot but I am sort of tired of looking for the ones that i would consider perfect. Here are the ones i selected in order of preference: http://www.cen.uiuc.edu/~d-papa/ I think this guy has done a neat job, the page is easy to load, has nice graphics, gives enough information about friends and interests and it is all presented fairly nicely. http://www.students.uiuc.edu/~juniper/ This is an OK site, it has a nice introduction page but turns quite ordinary once one starts clicking buttons. http://www.students.uiuc.edu/~uchida/ this is also a neat site, the buttons/bullets are very interesting and make the page look interesting bu the person doesn't have much interesting stuff to say. Also, one of the button keeps rotating and that is a bit disturbing. I hope that you will enjoy looking at these pages, regards, Smita.

From: "Richard Makopondo" <rmakopon@lan1.als.uiuc.edu> To: j-levin@staff.uiuc.edu Date: Mon, 29 Sep 1997 13:03:35 CST Subject: Exemplary personal web page Hi Prof. Levin, This web page by a Kenyan in the US is an example of a well laid out web page. The page is by Karume, whose URL is http://www.ifu.net/~karume. The gentleman has a lot of material but most of it is hidden and can only be accessed through links on the homepage. Although Mr. karume also has one of those moving eye catchers which forgets to turn off, this does not seem to distract alot since there isn't much literature on the home page. Good day Richard
From: gosling@uiuc.edu Date: Thu, 02 Oct 1997 08:48:31 -0500 To: j-levin@uiuc.edu Subject: Assignment for 9-18-97 Dear Dr. Levin, Here is what I believe to be an exemplary personal web page: http://www.wwd.net/user/deskins/ I found it very difficult to find a site with all the components I was looking for and I may have cheated a bit! While the site I chose is a personal one, the author is actually a self-employed webmaster & TV News Photographer. Jeff Deskins includes pages with links to his personal interests as well as his professional work. The reasons I like this site are numerous: *it is very well designed: Jeff manages to include all his major links on the front end and allows for navigation without the need to scroll down the page *good use of graphics: I like his use of the spider web as the main navigation tool *interesting effect of links sliding down the page (by what I believe is a javascript) *not to much clutter or color *fast loading (even with the extra effects) *search page included in the site *navigation menu on left side of page throughout most of the site. My only complaint is that the menu is not consistent and may result in the user getting lost!
