Prof. Levin,
As assigned, I have spent the last several weeks scouring the Web for an
"exemplary" home page. In the process I have viewed literally dozens of
home pages, and I have drawn some conclusions from this experience:
1. Good home pages, like any quality items, are scarcer than
mediocre ones. It is clear, however, that the good ones
reflect a considerable amount of work on the part of their
owners, and they should be a justifiable source of pride.
2. While some of the home pages suffered from sophomoric or, at
best, uninspired contents, the primary failings, in my opinion,
were in the style of presentation.
One common problem was the construction of a monolithic stream
of information, usually spanning several pages. This structure
makes it difficult to find pertinent information quickly. By
contrast, the really good home pages usually were hierarchically
organized, lead from sparse information to greater complexity,
and made good use of the hyper-text nature of the Web.
On the other hand, a few of the home pages were replete with
links. One had nearly every word or phrase in the first
paragraph linking to something, obviating much of the visual
and cognitive benefit of more judiciously chosen links.
3. For obvious reasons, computer science students, staff, and
faculty comprise an inordinate proportion of the home page owners.
As a computer programmer I look forward to the day when more
artists, authors, and other members of the humanities populate the
ranks of home page denizens.
4. If the "virtual neighborhood" or "electronic community" really
becomes a phenomena of the population at large, home pages may
well be a contributing force. It is amazing how much one can learn
about some people through their home pages. Between the sometimes
copious amounts of personal information and the fairly obligatory
digital photo, it is easy to get the feeling that one really knows
the home page owner. I hope that this rather frank intimacy is
not abused, and, particularly, that it does not lead to yet another
venue in which women are harassed.
5. My home page will probably not make it onto anyone's exemplary
list either!
Ruminations aside, I should fulfill the objective of the assignment. The best
home page which I ran across belongs to James J. O'Donnell, a professor of
classical studies, author, and, it appears, a vocal proponent of computers and
networking in humanities education. His home page exemplifies the afore-
mentioned virtues of clarity and structure, uses photographic icons well, and
contains a surfeit of interesting references, including (among his publications)
a fascinating article of his on the "future" of Virtual Libraries, not to
mention the last will and testament of a roasted pig, in Latin. Those wishing
to find out more are invited to visit:

Professor Levin--
I found two personal web pages that I thought were well done. They are both
very professional and give "attention getting" information, on a personal
level (in the case of the first) and a very simple and professional level
(in the case of the second). Niether has a personal picture, which I didn't
feel mattered, but given the academic status of both individuals, I feel it
may have been simply a personal choice.

Dr. Levin,
I found a personal page that I liked for Lynn Ward.
http://tampico.cso.uiuc.edu/nas/lynn.html
Part of the taxonomy that is on the Internet is communication concerning
the Applied Life Studies College. It contains information about the
college, its programs and its people. The title could be Applied Life
Studies. http://www.als.uiuc.edu
Something that is not on Internet (that I would like to put on) is
communication among Champaign county elementary school concerning
environmental education. A couple of schools will be connected soon, and
I would like to put information about the forest preserves on.

Professor Levin,
I really did not find much that I liked in the way way of personal home
pages. Maybe I don't really understand the limitations involved.
I think, though, of all the pages I looked at, Alan Braverman's was the
most entertaining. Other people seem to agree; I've seen his name
mentioned all over the place.

My favorite home page is Kaitlin Ducky Sherwood's:

Her page is linked to many WWW related resources. I looked for her page
because she clearly had a lot of experience with the Webb when I heard her
speak at an NCSA presentation last fall.

Dear Professor Levin,
As I wandered aimlessly around MOSAIC looking for home pages, I quickly
tired of the pages filled with a blast of information. The neverending
paragraphs were difficult to read through. The home page I found most
refreshing in terms of organization was by Tad Gralewski at:
http://ux1.cso.uiuc.edu:80/~tadg/
The author starts with information on how to reach him and then goes to his
interests.
His style is simple, not overwhelming, and very accessible.

Subject: My Favorate Personal Web Page
Hi, Professor Levin
I found an interesting personal web page, it is about the President
Clinton's and his family. The URL is as follows:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/White_House/Family/html/Life.html
Now, I will quote some part of his personal web page:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When Bill Clinton was a senior in high school, he was selected to go to
Washington, D.C., to be part of Boys Nation. Bill Clinton was one of the
first in line to shake President Kennedy's hand in the Rose Garden. After
that, he knew he wanted to make a difference in the lives of people by
becoming President of the United States.
The President and Mrs. Clinton believe very strongly in the importance of
being involved in one's community.
Hillary Clinton, who has always found time to work with the children of
the community, joins in on the fun at a local school with two young artists.
