Lake of the Woods County Park, located in Mahomet Township in west-central Champaign County, is about one-half mile northeast of the village of Mahomet. The preserve contains almost 900 acres.
Set on rolling, wooded terrain, the site is comprised of a diverse combination of plant habitats, from grasslands to stands of old hardwood forests. Much of the untended grassland at the Lake of the Woods site is in succession, with shrubby growth and trees throughout. The preserve offers two woodland habitats - floodplain and upland forests. Woodland vegetation is concentrated along the Sangamon River corridor and in scattered patches throughout the park. Approximately two miles of the Sangamon River run through or along the preserve's boundary. The preserve includes two lakes - the Lake of the Woods main lake and Elk's Lake.
Of the park's total acreage, an estimated 332 acres are developed. Developments include the Earl American Museum, the Mabrey Gelvin Botanical Garden and the Hartwell C Howard Golf Course. There are three enclosed buildings (Izaak Walton Cabin, Lake of the Woods Pavilion and Elk's Lake Pavilion) and three open-air shelters (Rotary Hill Shelter, Swiss Valley Shelter and Sycamore Hollow Shelter) available for day rental which can accommodate groups up to 450.
