Lewis and Clark Community College, Godfrey, IL, is seeking funding for a model demonstration program under the U.S.D.E.'s Postsecondary Ecuation Programs for Individuals with Disabilities Program in order to improve the delivery and outcomes of postsecondary education for individuals with disabilities. The proposed program, Supported School-to-Work Transition Project, will provide comprehensive higher education services to students with developmental disabilities.
Designed to recruit and retain students in Lewis and Clark CC's five-county district in southwestern Illinois, the program will serve 50 students per year over the three-year grant period. Working with local high schools, parent groups, community-based organizations, and minority-serving organizations, the program will increase basic academic and vocational skills among these students, leading to improved prospects for independent living and competitive employment.
The program's goals are minority student involvement, accommodation, support employment, agency linkage, parent education, assessment, and reproducibility.
Objectives, and their associated program activities center on significantly increasing services for and enrollment of minority students with developmental disabilities, intensive tutoring and individualized student support, curriculum revision, adapting lessons learned from other successful Lewis and Clark Community College programs, coordinating existing services, joint planning with other organizations, community outreach, developing innovative assessment tools, and designing a project that can be reproduced and implemented at other public community colleges.
