College of Education User Web Folder Frequently Asked Questions
- What is a User Web Folder? User Web Folders
are simply folders on a web server. Students, staff, and faculty
in the College of Education place their files in their own personal
web folder and they become available on the Web.
- Who can Create User Web Folders? User Web
Folders can be created by staff, and faculty who are enrolled
in or associated with the College of Education. Student User
Web Folders can only be created for students by their instructors.
This can only be done while the student is in a course that
utilizes User Web Folders.
- How do my students get User Web Folders?
Students acquire User Web Folders during their first course
in which the instructor advocates or requires them. Instructors
who've decided they want their students to have a User Web Folder
simply contact the Office of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) at 244-7005 to request the Student User Web
Folder service. The instructor will receive training for the
simple web interface that helps the instructor create and manage
the students' User Web Folders.
- How do I create my User Web Folder? Staff
and Faculty may create their own User Web Folder at https://www-s.ed.uiuc.edu/intranet/webs/account.asp. Under the heading "Your Web Folder," next to "Web Folder
Status:" will be a link "Create Folder." Select this link to
create your User Web Folder. Students without staff appointments
must be sponsored by or enrolled in a course led by an instructor
who has received training on Student
User Web Folders.
- How can I access (create, read, write, modify, delete)
files in my User Web Folder? You may access your web
folder through the Windows Network neighborhood or Apple Chooser.
FTP access is not available for security reasons. Documentation
on a variety of access methods from UIUC dialup or campus networks,
can be found at http://www.ed.uiuc.edu/cio/network. The location of your User Web Folder can be found at:
https://www-s.ed.uiuc.edu/intranet/webs/account.asp
after you create your User Web Folder.
- What is the URL of my User Web Folder? Your
User Web Folder will be in one of the following locations, where
NETID is replaced by your UIUC NetID.
- Students: http://students.ed.uiuc.edu/NETID
- Staff: http://staff.ed.uiuc.edu/NETID
- Faculty: http://faculty.ed.uiuc.edu/NETID
- What content is acceptable for User Web Folders? Appropriate
content is...

Executable files and applications are explicitly prohibited.
- How much space will my User Web Folder hold?
User Web Folders may contain up to 100MB of files.
- How do I check the status of my User Web Folder?

- How do I set permissions on my User Web Folder?
You are not able to change the permissions on your User Web
Folder. When they are created the permissions are set so that
you can create, delete, rename, and edit the content of folders
and files and so web browsers can read those files and folders.
Faculty and staff who need others to access their folders may
request this by emailing webmaster@mail.ed.uiuc.edu.
- How long can I keep my User Web Folder on the server?

- If you are a student using your User Web Folder as part
of a class, technical support and training is to be provided
by your instructor.
- Limited support for User Web Folders is available at the
Learning Design Lab in room 10 of the
Education building. Consultants will be able
to help you to access your User Web Folder, to check your
account status, to test and troubleshoot authentication
issues, and to access User Web Folder service documentation.
