Research Biography

Some of my past projects include: 1) A College Board/Getty project that examined arts integration into academic curricula in five high schools in Boston, Vancouver, WA, Brownsville, TX, Las Cruces, NM and Baltimore; 2) The National Arts Education Research Center, with Bob Stake and Linda Mabry, and a project funded by the NEA, where we examined ordinary arts programs in the country; 3) A long-term study of the operational curricula taught by arts specialists (dance, drama, music, visual arts).

My current project is an inter-disciplinary project at the intersection of performing arts studies, aesthetics, anthropology, and education, focusing on educational and aesthetic values of arts centers and the experiential learning they provoke and inspire. This long-term qualitative study is now conducted in the US, expanding to additional sites in other countries.

A recent area of interest is intellectual, artistic and social entrepreneurship across disciplines in academe. This interest is motivated by the current increasing crossing of disciplinary boundaries and the ensuing cross-fertilization, resulting in unprecedented opportunities to expand the role of academics beyond traditional, often self-imposed boundaries. I have embarked on a series of case-studies that focus on intellectual and artistic entrepreneurs.
