Financial Aid

 

Financial aid in the form of fellowships, teaching and research assistantships, and tuition and fee waivers is available to doctoral students on a competitive basis.  Limited financial aid is available to Master's degree students.  For full consideration for financial aid, students need to apply for Fall admission, and their complete applications should be received by the Department no later than December 1 or as soon as possible thereafter.  Applicants interested in financial aid should mark the graduate application form accordingly and fill out the Financial Aid Request Form.  Applicants for financial aid are also encouraged to fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  It is available from the Office of Student Financial Aid.

Assistantship Clearinghouse

The Assistantship Clearinghouse lists hourly positions and assistantships available to graduate students at the University. 

Bagley Scholar Fellowship

The William Chandler Bagley Scholar Fellowships are funded from gifts of alumni and friends of the College of Education and named after William Chandler Bagley, an early Director of the former School of Education, who is known for his insistence that both formal training and experience are needed to promote good educational practices.  Doctoral students receive $2,000 and master's students receive $1,500.

Boruszak Fellowship

The Joan Kohlenbrener Boruszak Fellowship provides support for an exceptional student in teacher education who plans to teach in the inner city of Chicago or a similar urban area. 

Conference Travel Grant

Conference Travel Grants provide a grant of up to $300 for students to travel to professional conferences.  These conference travel awards are intended to support students who will be presenting papers, posters, or creative work at the conferences they attend.  In addition to the required materials, provide a strong letter from the student’s adviser and evidence of the student’s paper being accepted at the conference.  Additional information can be found at www.grad.uiuc.edu/Policies/travelgrant/conftravelgrant.html

Students may not submit applications directly to the Graduate College. All required materials must be submitted to the Department of Curriculum & Instruction, 311 Education, before 5:00 on February 19, 2007.

Davis Leadership Award

The Al S. Davis Leadership Award honors the life and educational career of Al Davis and his long and ongoing relationship with the College of Education.  Al Davis strongly believes that all students can learn in an educational climate highlighted by strong leadership.  This merit-based award supports a graduate student in the College of Education who intends to pursue a leadership role in teaching/administration in a K-12 urban school environment.  Scholars will receive an award of $1,000. Application information.

Dissertation Completion Fellowship

Dissertation Completion Fellowships are designed to help outstanding students complete the doctoral degree in a timely fashion by providing a one-year stipend of $17,000, a full waiver of tuition, service fee, health service fee, as well as basic dental and vision coverage.  In addition, the Fellow will receive $100 per semester toward the cost of the graduate student health insurance fee.  The intent is to free Fellows from assistantships and other such obligations, allowing them to devote full-time to the completion of the dissertation. No concurrent appointment or employment of any kind is permitted with the Dissertation Completion Fellowship. Additional information can be found at https://www.grad.uiuc.edu/Fellowship/index.cfm.

Dissertation Travel Grant

Dissertation Travel Grants provide reimbursement to subsidize travel and associated costs necessary for doctoral dissertation research, whether for exploring a potential dissertation topic (i.e., before extensive research has been done) or for conducting dissertation research.  Approximately 12 grants at amounts up to $5,000 will be awarded given sufficient funding.  Additional information can be found at https://www.grad.uiuc.edu/Fellowship/index.cfm

Students may not submit applications directly to the Graduate College. The thesis director must submit an incredibly strong and detailed letter.  All required materials must be submitted to the Department of Curriculum & Instruction, 311 Education before 5:00 on February 21, 2006.

Federal Work Study

Rodgers Award

This merit-based award was established to honor the career of professor emeritus Frederick A. Rodgers, a recipient of the Education Alumni Association's 2002 Distinguished Alumni Award.  The Frederick A. Rodgers award supports doctoral candidates in the College of Education who work with underserved students in an urban setting while working full-time as teachers or administrators.  Scholars will receive an award to be determined on an annual basis by the Graduate Awards Committee (award not less than $1,000). Application information.

Stiss Fellowship

The Seymour Stiss Fellowship provides support for a student in social studies education who is planning to pursue a doctorate at some point in their career.
