Graduate Requirements & Deadlines

Admission Requirements

Applicants to the department are screened by the department admissions committee using a mix of criteria. The minimum requirements as listed are used to form the basis of the admissions decision. The department aims to admit students whose academic and professional career goals are best served by the faculty and core of courses offered by the department and who will contribute to their field of study.

Student's GPA
An important attribute to reach an admissions decision is the student's GPA. Once the Graduate College Application has been completed and official transcripts have been received, C & I staff will request calculation of the GPA.

Applicants to C & I programs must have a combined undergraduate and graduate GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale to qualify for admission to the Graduate College.

Test Scores
For applicants interested in the Masters + Teacher certification programs, a "pass" on the Basic Skills test is required.  If a student is interested in Secondary Education, they must also pass the Content Area Test.  More information on the ICTS tests and dates can be found here.

For applicants interested in either a) Math, Science, and Technology (MST) doctoral programs or b) Early Childhood Education masters or doctoral programs, the GRE is required. However, the department does not require a minimum score for the GRE. The GRE must have been taken within four years of the term being applied for.

All international applicants must demonstrate English proficiency. This is measured by the TOEFL exam. The minimum scores required for full status are:103 (iBt) 253 (cBt) and 610 (pBt).  The TOEFL must have been taken within two years of the term being applied for.

A Complete Application
Students must submit a complete application with all supporting materials by the deadline.  Please visit our Application Process page for more information.  Also, a condensed printable checklist is available here

Deadlines

All applications must be processed by the C & I department and the Graduate College. In order to receive full consideration for admission, applicants are encouraged to submit all of their application materials and other requirements as early as possible before the deadline. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the application is complete and all materials are received by the C & I Graduate Programs Secretary by the deadline.

Curriculum and Instruction offers admission to all of our programs during all three semesters EXCEPT for our Master's plus Teacher Certification program (which only offers Fall admission).

Financial aid decisions are made in February-March of each year. Applicants who wish to be considered for various College and University fellowships and scholarships MUST submit their application to the C & I department by December 1 of the preceding year.  Financial aid is not guaranteed and is limited and competitive.

The deadlines by which completed application and all supporting materials must be received for all Curriculum & Instruction graduate programs are as follows:

  • December 1 - for full consideration for Fall admission for all C & I programs, and the deadline for consideration for Financial Aid opportunities (This is considered Deadline #1 for our first round of reviews).  This is the FINAL deadline for Master's plus Teacher Certification applicants.  Admissions decisions will be made and announced in late February.
  • March 1 - (Final) Deadline #2 for Fall admission and Summer admission.  Students will not be considered for Financial Aid.  Admissions decisions will be made and announced in late April.
  • October 15 - for Spring admission.  Students will not be considered for Financial Aid.  Admissions decisions will be made and announced in late November.
