About Curriculum and Instruction

In the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, faculty and graduate students collaborate to create new knowledge, practices, and theories related to the education and learning of children, youths, and adults.  We prepare professional teachers, teacher educators, and researchers who provide leadership in such areas as aesthetics education, bilingual/ESL education, children's literature, content area knowledge acquisition and instruction (English, mathematics, science, and social studies), curriculum theory and development, early childhood and elementary education, literacy, multicultural education, teacher education, and technology.  The Department consistently has been ranked in the top ten graduate departments in the nation by US News and World Report.

The Department is organized around three curricular divisions: Curriculum, Aesthetics, and Teacher Education; Language and Literacy; and Mathematics, Science, and Technology. Many of the faculty members have appointments in more than one division and graduate students are encouraged to take courses across the divisions. Graduate students assist faculty members with cutting edge research, which often leads to publications in prestigious journals and books.

Faculty members are engaged in research that has broad theoretical and practical implications for schooling funded by agencies such as the National Science Foundation, U. S. Department of Education, Spencer Foundation, National Institute of Health, and the Fulbright Fellowship Program. A complete listing of current research projects and recent faculty publications is available.
