The generous support of an endowment from Charles Dunn Hardie has allowed the College of Education to make a new Strategic Initiatives Faculty Fellows awards available to faculty members in support of their research, which seeks to enhance the College’s ability to address the four ‘breakthrough” initiatives identified in the 2007 – 2010 Strategic Plan:
Center for Education in Small Urban Communities
Initiative on STEM Teaching and Learning
Ubiquitous Learning Institute: New Education Ecologies
Forum on the Future of Public Education
Faculty are encouraged to apply for this new award or for the existing Faculty Fellows Awards but cannot apply to both award categories. Please complete the cover sheet attached to the application to indicate which Faculty Fellows Award category is being applied for.

The strategic plan states “These initiatives represent areas in which we believe we could significantly enhance our research, teaching and service activities, achieve preeminence, and attract considerable external resources.” This Fellows program is designed to support the College’s effort in these areas by increasing faculty involvement and enhancing research and public service opportunities related to the initiatives.
Like the existing Faculty Fellows program, the Strategic Initiatives Fellows Program has been configured to offer faculty flexibility in how the funding is used. Total support for each Fellow will be a maximum of $20,000 per year, with up to two awards being made annually.
Use of the funds:
- Buy-out of up to two courses per year ($6,000/course) to be decided in consultation with Department Heads or Chairs.
- Graduate research assistance (including appropriate fringe benefits, obtain exact dollar amounts from the Business Office).
- Travel support: Maximum of $1000 for conference travel. Funds for research travel--amount to be justified.
- Summer salary up to campus cap ($6,000), including the appropriate fringe benefits.
- Supplies directly related to proposed research.
Fellows will maintain their department offices.
Reporting requirements:
- A brief initial report (no more than one page summary for a ‘lay’ audience) will need to be submitted to ODAR by May 15, 2008 (in order to complete an annual summary for the trustee in Australia)
- It is anticipated that the Strategic Initiative Fellows, along with other recipients of Hardie funds will present the results of their research or activities at an annual Hardie Endowment event.
- Fellows will also be required to submit a brief report summarizing their experience as a Fellow in August 2009 and the impact this has had on progressing the strategic goals of the College and campus.
Strategic Initiative Fellows will be encouraged to collaborate with one another to enhance research efforts and to work closely with their respective centers to develop proposals for external funding.
Tenure-track faculty of all ranks who are full-time in the University and budgeted at least part-time in the College of Education are eligible and encouraged to apply. Applicants wishing to receive feedback and advice prior to submitting a formal proposal are encouraged to submit a proposal draft to Lizanne DeStefano, who will pass it on to former Fellows for feedback with the goal of helping develop the proposal.
