Description Using literacy learning as a case, Dr. Carol D. Lee, President-elect AERA and 2008 LAS Alumni Achievement Award Honoree, discusses how a culturally responsive, ecologically centered science of learning and development offers a holistic guide for the design of rigorous and effective instruction for African American youth. She discusses how an expanded view of Cultural Modeling (her design framework for culturally responsive instruction) integrates a cognitive as well as psycho-social focus, creating multiple pathways to excellence for youth, especially youth from non-dominant groups.
