Unit Goals and Objectives
- Students will gain a sense of their personal history along with the history of people in early America by studying quilts and the stories that they record and tell.
- Students will develop an understanding of how history is passed down through a variety of sources and documents including crafts and photographs by studying authentic documents (quilts and photos) as well as reading a number of trade books.
- Students will examine how the history of everyday people is recorded in everyday objects of the home. Indirectly students will be exposed to a side of history, womenÕs history, that is often left out of de-emphasized.
- Students will discover how geometry and spatial relations are evident and important outside of school, in common activities and artifacts by analyzing the use of geometric shapes and patterning in quilts and quilt making.
- Students will develop a knowledge base and understanding of where fabric comes from and how it was made by investigating samples of plant and animal fibers, reading trade books about fibers and weaving, as well as writing a book of their own.
- Students will take part in activities that connect their home and personal lives to school and realize that our class values their culture, experiences, and background through the sharing of family quilts and family histories.
