"The Sunita Experiment"

Approx. Time: 30-45 minutes (daily/periodically throughout the study)
Objectives
- Children will discuss in written form issues of immigrants, particularly second generation immigrants.
- Children will be exposed to conflict between generations.
- Children will take information they gather and reflect upon it in the development of their own opinions.
Materials
- Perkins, Mitali. (1993) The Sunita Experiment. New York: Hyperion. Paperbacks For Children.
- Journals
Procedures
- This chapter book will be read aloud to the children on a daily basis.
- Each reading period will be followed by a oral discussion and/or a written journal entry on the topic.
- The topic will often deal will issues such as
- assimilation
- conflict between generations
- maintaining culture
- difficulties of being an immigrant
- how to deal with and appreciate difference
- I will respond to the journal on a weekly basis (I will have a rotation where I will respond to a few journals per day). This will be a place for the children to deal with some very thought provoking topics related to culture and immigration. It will also provide an avenue for communication between teacher and student.
Evaluation
- Obj. #1, #2, #3: All of the objectives for this lesson will be assessed through the journal entries themselves. I will be looking for:
- connections to the text, references to specific characters, events, etc.
- the development of ideas, opinions
- thought provoking dialogue between myself and student
- clear written expression
