Assistant Teachers work in pairs on Macintosh PowerBooks issued by the Office of Educational Technology.ÝÝÝ 

To know enough about a computer so that it is a welcome electronic tool.

To know about and use word processing, spread sheets and data

base.

To know about and use Internet and WWW to locate resources, etc.

To know about and be able to obtain Shareware and Freeware.

To know about and be able to use ListServs and NewsGroups.

To communicate via e-mail with colleagues.

To use the computer in the elementary classroom.

To gain knowledge of software availability and selection.

To gain knowledge of managing a one computer classroom.

	Fall Semester, 1997- 1998 Academic YearÝ
Sept. 5	Distributed Powerbooks, introduced connecting to internet from home, accessing email with PINE.Ý
Sept. 12	Helped students with hardware/software problems, revisited connecting from home, showed how to use Eudora.Ý
Sept. 19	Revisited Eudora. Helped students with hardware/software problems.Ý  Netscape--how to use; showed 97-98 YLP pages (requested students to find 5 websites related to elementary school teaching, critique them, and indicate how they can be used)ÝÝ  Assignment: Due Oct. 3. Complete the survey of computers in classrooms. Assignment was sent via e-mail and is to be returned to Karl Koenke via e-mail.ÝÝ  Provided: one disk to copy Eudora folder for use in classrooms or at home.

Actual Projects/Assignments:Ý

• Subscribe to PreSTO as an example of a ListServ.
• Use the word-processing tool to write and Eudora to send several journal entries.
• Survey your classroom for status and use of technology. Assignment is sent and returned via e-mail.
• Find the Champaign and Urbana Curriculum Guides on the College of Education Gopher Server and determine how your required Mini-Unit fits in. Include explanation in your Mini-unit.
• Save your required Mini - Unit on a disk and give it to me so that we may put it on the College of Ed Gopher Server as an example of an integrated mini-unit. The idea is to have some examples available so that students can react to previous units or use some portion in their units.

Possible Projects/Assignments:Ý

• After two weeks of lurking send your reactions to PreSTO to me via e-mail.
• Critique a lesson found by using Gopher. Either our Gopher server or AskERIC.
• Subscribe to a News-Group
• Describe a lesson that you observe using the format that I send to you via e-mail. Send your described lesson to me via e-mail.
• When you write the personal statement section of your resume, let one of your friends in this class react to it. Use e-mail.
