Lesson Topic: Riddle Poem
Grade Level: 2nd Grade

Approximate Time: 1 hr.-1 1/2 hours

Objectives:

  1. The students will continue practicing and improving on their writing skills by writing poems (Knowledge).
  2. The students will review what 'adjectives' are by using adjectives in their riddle poems (Knowledge).
  3. The students will describe a fruit or vegetable by its looks, feel, smell, taste, and where its found (Application).

Materials:

  1. Example of a riddle poem
  2. Construction paper
  3. Writing paper (8 1/2" x 11" cut into four)
  4. Scissors
  5. Crayons/markers
  6. Pencil
  7. Glue
  8. Riddle worksheet

Procedures:

  1. Review with students what 'adjectives' are.
  2. Share with the class the example of a riddle poem.
  3. Explain to the students that they will be creating a riddle poem of their own. Have the students brainstorm for different 'fruits' or 'vegetables' that they can use to describe in their riddle poem.
  4. Have the students start by filling out the descriptions of the object on the worksheet.
  5. When the students have completed the 'riddle poem' on the worksheet, have them transfer all that they have written onto the writing paper.
  6. Once the poem is written, the students can start cutting out the fruit or vegetable that they have described in their poem (for smaller children, patterns might be helpful).
  7. After the fruit or vegetable is cut out, glue the poem on top of the construction paper.
  8. Have the students share their riddle poems if they are wish to.
  9. Optional: the students work can be attached to a 'fruit tree' or a 'vegetable garden'.

Assessment:

  1. Did the students have difficulties thinking of 'adjectives' to describe their fruit or vegetable? Did they remember what an 'adjective' is?
  2. Did the students write about other fruits and vegetables or did they do exactly what the teacher did? ENCOURAGE CREATIVITY!
