Lesson Topic/Subject: Building a Diplodocus
Grade Level: Kindergarten
Teacher of Lesson: Emily Maki

Objective:

The students will learn about the characteristics of Sauropods. Students will be able to make a Diplodocus using Starburst candy.

Materials:

• Starburst Candy
• Diplodocus , by Ron Wilson
• enlarged picture of Diplodocus
• models of Sauropods
• Glue
• Construction Paper with certain points of the dinosaur drawn in as a guideline (feet, top of head, end of tail)

Procedures:

Have children look at the models and see what the dinosaurs all have in common (long necks)

Read story Diplodocus to the children while asking children questions.

Tell children that they are now going to build a Diplodocus using candy. Pass out candy and have the children work in small groups. Have children use the Starburst to create the dinosaur. Tell them that a good place to begin would be at the head or feet since those lines are drawn in already.

When the children are finished, they may name their dinosaur. Display around the room.
